0617 hours: Dawn Breaks....and thus begins the Knights Of Arkham Saga... The inmates slowly look around at the others surrounding them in the wake of the massacre. Batman and the other scum! There were in here. You were sure of it! But how would you find them? Then... a wall collapses, and like a shining angel from the heavens, you all see the device. Gleaming in the dawn's first rays of hope, the metal glistens and twinkles. A chorus of voices all think to themselves the same thought: " PERFECT...." The electroshock chair- used to "rehabilitate" so many of you in your stays here at Arkham. It sits, beckoning like the Virgin Mary's lap in a twisted Holy Pietà of your warped Arkham Minds. This is a message! The Perfect solution to finding Batman and ridding him once and for all! You know he's amongst you all, but which one he could be? Well, the chair never lies. The chair will rehabilitate the BatMan. The Chair reveals all in Death! That is how justice was always enforced in Arkham, and thus even in its darkest hours, that's how Justice shall be enforced. All of your cracked minds gather together and begin plotting the Rules for this twisted game: -Each of you will get a Vote. -The person who at Dusk [Friday at 9:00pm ]has the most votes will be put onto the chair and interrogated. Once they Ride the Lightning and their bodies are limp, you will search them to see who they are and what they were really up to. -If for some reason, one wants to lynch no one, they must specify "VOTE NO LYNCH"-It will be plurality solves all: Whoever has the MOST votes by Dusk regardless of how few there are, will be lynched. [To No Lynch, that one must have the most VOTES for it. Non-votes do not count as a "no lynch"]. -If 50% of the living population+1 more votes for someone, they will create a 24 hour countdown for the Victim. If no change occurs, within 24 hours, said victim will be lynched. -During the Night, There will be No Strategy discussed. The inmates will relax, and get their beauty sleep for the next Day to begin. -Dawn will be on Mondays. Dusks will be on Fridays. -- All Night Actions MUST be Submitted by 6pm on Sunday in order to be tallied. The Night will continue though until the Dawn thread is posted, and all talks can continue as such. However, ALL NIGHT ACTIONS must be submitted by 6pm SUNDAY. - Dio will be in charge of Vote Tally's during the Day. Roosh will be around to answer Qs and lend a hand, but Dio is the Day Mod. His stuff is the Final Say on Vote Counts and Such Day activities. - Roosh will be in charge of Night Actions. If you send a Night Action to Dio, it will likely not go through. Roosh is the final Say on Night Activities. Plan accordingly. -If you have any questions or such, feel free to PM the Mods, or ask The Mods in Green. We will try to stay out of your hair otherwise. -Have Fun. No, Really, you're in Arkham fucking Asylum and you're in charge, You run the shows, you do what you want. Have Fun slaughtering each other! -Let the Day Begin!

In the intro thread there was a brief discussion about lynching lurkers. This touches on a discussion that came up in the Forbidden thread for the current SDMB mafia game(There aren't any spoilers/hidden information/outside analysis of that game in this post):
sachertorte made the point that way too many townies have been keeping their heads down and doing whatever they could to avoid attention in games recently. The problem with this is that it provides a perfect cover for the scum to do likewise, and it's in the scum's best interests to keep their noses clean. Compounding the issue is how the Town has a very unfortunate tendency to lynch the loudest players -- this gives Townies more of an incentive to keep their heads down. In a no-vanilla game like this one it gets even worse, because players with power roles tend to be more cautious. The net result of all this is that there's basically nothing to analyze and the town reaches the end of the game with too little information with which to find the scum. You-Solve-It was a classic example of all this.
We need to be harsh on those who aren't discussing much, whether that's by out-and-out lurking, driveby voting, posting nothing but fluff, or immediately distancing oneself from their own actions. I don't expect 100 posts/day from everyone but I do expect that I should have some impression about all of you within the first couple of Days.

I mean, in the end we're playing a game, right? Despite the possible tactical advantage of lurking, it makes for quite a dull game if everyone is standing around tight-lipped. The question I have is what do you mean by "be harsh" on lurkers? Or are you just promoting vigilance, ie, "X isn't posting too much"?

If a countdown is created, but then unvoted/revoted/etc., the countdown will be re-set and start from whenever the last 50%+1 occurred The Night Mod's Ruling: 2. Yes. Night Actions will ALWAYS be Due by 6pm Sunday. Earlier is better and all. But if you speed lynch someone on Monday, you'll just have a REALLY REALLY Long Night, as I will always Start Dawn On a Monday just like toDay.

Post by Greedy Smurf on Mar 17, 2008 0:26:52 GMT -5
So let's get started hunting down the big black bat (and friends) So here's my preliminary take on the game setup, The scum are Batman and friends, so I presume Robin, Batgirl, et al. They are the characters as distinct from roles. What the specific roles will be - who knows - In the comics Batman is a superb detective, so maybe his role will be a scum detective able to investigate a townie each night? As to numbers of the scum, with 25 players somewhere between 4 and 6 scum is usually considered balanced I think? Correct me if I'm wrong there. And it would be a fairly safe bet I think in a themed game like this that all the scum will have powers of one kind or another. The town on the other is an array of characters from Batman's Rogue Gallery. So much like Firefly Mafia we all have both a character and a role. And i think it is important to keep that in mind. One of the reasons is that having a specific character (or claiming one) won't necessarily establish whose side they are on, even without the brainwashing shenanigans of Firefly. A 'for instance' off the top of my head is Catwoman, she could conceivably be on either side.

Not to mention, a false claim wouldn't be that hard. Just pick a mostly-obscure villain and hope that you don't overlap with a real player. But we'll deal with role claims as they happen.
Anyone else feel a bit tripped up by the terminology? Calling Batman & friends "scum" feels off.

Oh yeah, and the colour would seem to indicate that there are two scum factions:
Just to further complicate the analysis of role-claims -- someone could claim a totally legitimate villain's role, only lying about what side they're on.
That'll mean that there are more scum out there, because they'll be trying to kill each other as well as Townies(How are the night-kills going to work, anyway? Doesn't Batman disavow killing?) I guess we'll find out toMorrow morning.

I'm betting the caped crusader and his minions will have fake role claims readily available. I don't think, if pressured, the ringleader of our doom is going to jump out and say "I'M BATMAN!" I could be wrong, of course... Batman, feel free to jump out and say that, please. I took the color to mean that there are probably some independent types out there. A serial killer or two perhaps, (come on this IS an asylum people) or maybe a survivor like Yo-Saff-Bridge. Maybe even a speculator-ish third party faction. I doubt there are two scum factions, though. I'm also not particularly against the idea of looking at lurkers more closely, but as I'm a man of few posts myself usually, I'd like to maybe point out that we should not necessarily look at "lurkers" but rather low content people. I have relatively low numbers of posts, but I try to make all my posts high in content with as little fluff as possible. We shouldn't just pay attention to post counts, but also look at the people who always promise analysis but never follow through.

Good pick up there Rysto. However personally I don't read that as another 'scum' group, which to me in this game means the do gooders. I read that as either A) a seperate third party, like the prospectors (I think that was the faction name) in Bladerunner, or the non-believers in the Sekham game on the Dope. or B) several different individuals trying to win for themselves, eg. a Serial Killer ( isn't that all of the townies in this game),

And upon preview of Atarus's post Speculators it was in Bladerunner.
And to further expand on my earlier thought on Character vs Role - We need to be careful about accepting 'character' claims at face value, given the sheer volume of background and canon that the Batman mythos has, it is going to be relatively easy for Batman & Friends to dig up obscure villains that likely can't be counterclaimed.
So I for one won't immediately be accepting character claims on face value, it will either have to include role details that I'm happy with or some other compelling reason.

I'm also not particularly against the idea of looking at lurkers more closely, but as I'm a man of few posts myself usually, I'd like to maybe point out that we should not necessarily look at "lurkers" but rather low content people. Right, see - this complicates, or perhaps clarifies things. How are we going to measure who (and this is really what we're all looking for here anyway) is contributing the least substance to the discussion. A post of complete fluff is no more informative than no post at all. Perhaps we should instead keep a look out for Quality Posts (inspired by quality starts). Maybe we can occasionally take counts of substantive, quality posts? Such as... We shouldn't just pay attention to post counts, but also look at the people who always promise analysis but never follow through. ...posts that offer analysis would be considered substantive, as would posts that promise analysis that eventually deliver. Empty promises on the other hand shouldn't be rewarded. It's not perfect, but it might be getting closer to the actual scum. So I for one won't immediately be accepting character claims on face value, it will either have to include role details that I'm happy with or some other compelling reason. This seems like a prudent suggestion. Trouble is if they're good liars realistically it will be difficult to judge the authenticity of any claim short of a lynching or counter claim. I'll be in my bunk.

Take a second look at your quote from the opening color, Rysto. "The Town" is the entity that appeared not to be in complete agreement to the eye witness who managed to get out of Arkham alive. At least that is how I interpret that passage.
I'm all for subjectively dragging lurkers and low content posters over the coals as much as possible, so long as we all try as much as possible to supplement the dragging with at least some analysis.

I'm not sure that the number of posts is all that useful in determining whether a player is contributing or not. Is a player contributing less if he writes one novel of a post?
Anyway, I didn't bring this up to get into a discussion on how to measure how much a player is contributing. If any of you wants to come up with some metric you can go right ahead, but I'm going to mostly rely on my gut. The reason I brought it up was to put everyone on notice that I'm going to regard players who contribute little as suspicious, and to remind all Townies that it's critical for us to discuss and get things in the open so we have material to analyze. I don't want this game to end up like Conspiracy, where sheer dumb luck and brilliant play from a couple of Townie power roles saved the game for the town.

In a case like this, if there's an unvote and then a revote or new vote, does the countdown restart? Yes. If there are 50%+1 votes on one person for a consecutive 24 hour period, the Day is over. You may start and stop the clock as often as you wish be unvoting and revoting. Doing so excessively is likely to piss me off, however. If the Day ends early, the Nights will be extended. No matter what happens the previous Day, Dawn will always be on Monday morning.

What happens if there is a tie for the most votes? If you folks can't even put together a simple plurality, then *I* decide. (and by 'I', I mean a random.org coin flip) If it comes down to a coin flip, however, it will not count as a lynch for game purposes. Instead, it will count as a modkill. I should also add that any player that has Day actions must submit them to Diomedes and not to Roosh. A Day action submitted to Roosh has no better chance of going through than a Night action submitted to me.

One made it almost until the end, and the other lurked her way into a game-ending modkill. One other thing I'd like to address, and I've made this point before in other games and I will keep making it until things change, because it has been extremely harmful to us in past games. This last-hour lynching has to stop. There is no harm in throwing a vote out days before the deadline. It won't make you look scummy. You can always change it. The relative quiet that goes on for an entire real-life week, then all of a sudden rushing to a lynch in the final 2 hours never works. I'm still a little steamed about the Diomedes out-of-nowhere lynch in You-Solve-It.

We don't have majority voting going on, so we don't have to reach 50% to lynch. If you think the top two lynchees are both town, but someone else is scum, vote for them. Knowing who you are voting for is very useful to the town.
