They did have a rating system, and for a while it was a fun place to play. I even had a regular group of people that I used to play with but after a while most of us lost touch. I ended up leaving that group because two or three times a session someone would sign on to a game bid double nill and then sign back off after about 2 rounds. It ruined the whole vibe of the place.

I occasionally play cribbage, and my parents are teaching me to play pinochle.

Card games I play:
Serious strategy games: Euchre Spades Hearts Cribbage Gin (though I find it to be a bit boring after a while so I rarely play it) Oh Hell! (AKA Oh Pshaw!)
Party games: Bullshit Asshole/Revolution
WTF? games: Mao
Games I've played but not regularly at all: Variations of Rummy 31/Tonk Sheephead (The five-person version popular in Michigan/Wisconsin. I'd play it more, but no one seems to know how to play it.) A bunch more I'm probably forgetting

Oh, Hoopy! You play Bullshit? I can't find anyone who plays Bullshit. (AKA "Uno")

Hearts is the UNO equivalent I'm familiar with. Bullshit is a different beast entirely, at least in my neck of the woods.
I enjoy playing Blackjack (the only card game I'll play at a casino), Texas Hold 'em and any other poker game I can understand just for fun.
Gin, and Gin-Rummy are fun. I also enjoy cribbage. For partner games, I only know one, Pedro. Some of my extended family play that a lot around the holidays.

Hoopy, you play Euchre? You must be a midwesterner too. Growing up, I played it all the time. I've tried teaching my friends out here in California, but we don't play often enough for them to build up any skill level. We had several variations we played, depending on whose home we were at. Pinochle was big too. Spades and Bridge are cheap knock-offs compared to skilled Pinochle play.

Cookies: you'd probably like PaiGow Poker, then.
I love PaiGow, and unless the dealer hits a really hot streak I can usually play a couple of hours with $20 at a $5 minimum table.

They both seem like games where you really need to find a group of people who know how to play in order to learn.

Unfortunately afterward there really wasn't much chance to play it. It made me a monster at spades though.

I would love to learn to play either Pinochle or Bridge. They both seem like games where you really need to find a group of people who know how to play in order to learn. The basics of Pinochle (or Bridge ) is fairly simple, if you've played a "trump" card game before. The hard part are the "meld" bonus points and bidding strategy. Bidding is an art form--every set of partners has their own system and the personal elements of bluffing and counter-guessing your opposing bidders are great fun. And you're right that you really need to have experienced players show newbies how it all fits together. Although I expect a smart group of players could take the rules and figure it all out with a lot of practice.

Yeah, but tabletop D&D, message board D&D, or MMORPG D&D?

In terms of dork-ness: Tabletop > Message Board > MMORPG

I play euchre, too. I learned under the gimlet-eyed tutelage of my Great Aunt Margaret, who would cut you if you trumped her ace.
