I'd love to find a way to transfer our discussion so far onto this board, but I suppose that's asking for too much, huh?
Thanks so much for providing a forum, Idle. Googlegroups was making my head spin.

FOS on anyone who doesn't join this forum!
As nice as the new forum is, do we think we can last on Google until the end of Day 1? I kind of doubt there'll be a last-minute pirate bandwagon, and maybe it'll calm the confusion if we switch at night.

This looks fantastic - but like I said over on Google, my school firewalls everything with the word "Game" in the title. I would be absolutely out of touch, even during lunch and breaks, for 9-10 hours a day. Of course, there's only two weeks left.

Eh, it's not that important. It's only for a few days, and even then it would only be a serious issue if something hardcre went down in the time before a Day ends...and that never happens, right? Right?
...right?

I have problems viewing things in the working day, as I'm on a "course" and supposed to be using the IT for only a restricted range of things. While I can sneak into Google Groups there, I don't think I can get away with coming here.
Still, I'll go where the game goes. Arrr.

I am putting together a digest of the google groups posts from Day 1 in a thread I am calling Day .5.
I just finished the first page of posts from there. If anyone else wants to help out and post page 2 and 3 that would be great, otherwise I will continue to work on it when I have a chance.

All I can say is, thank goodness this game was moved over here... the other board was incredibly difficult to read, and was going to become next to impossible to use later in the game when trying to find (and link to) specific posts.
Sorry for my absence yesterday; I was attending a wedding and am now back.
I just noted a question directed to me on the other board, which I'm going to spend some time answering, because I think it's a very good question - namely, what sort of strategy did I employ as scum in previous games, and what mistakes would I correct in the present game were I scum again. Give me a little while and I'll be back. In the meantime, thanks again to Idle Thoughts and Malacandra for the switch.

For those with firewall is issues: does it help if you change the name to the direct ip number: 67.15.247.138?

And to answer my own question, no, it doesn't help. Proboards does some clever IP forwarding that prevents direct access.

Lurking cowgirl! Hiding in the shadows! What do you make of all this business about random votes and pirate logic? I have only recently figured out where to post, and am slowly regaining life after having been burnt by the sun and chomped by bugs on my real-life holiday this weekend. Also it's not clear to me that we have settled on using (a) this board for our game, and (b) this thread for all of Today's activities. But as I have been called out I will respond. And to your questions, I say, MOO! Also, my thoughts: - I am trying hard to disperse the ghosts of the last games out of my head. Which means that I feel like if I vote for someone who was scum last time, I'll be doing it just because they were scum last time, and that isn't fair, which means I'll have to vote for someone who WASN'T scum last time, which is equally unfair ... ah, the politics of piracy, huh. - Suspicious townies do quite often look scummier than scum. My heart broke when brewha got lynched in M2 because it was so clear to me (a spectator by that time) that he was completely townie but looking awful suspicious to the other townies, and therefore ripe for a little push by the mafia. Acting crazy and weird and paranoid seems to get folks lynched a lot, but is so not a scum tell. (For instance, Storyteller was acting weird and paranoid in W2, but it was all part of his brilliant scheme and none of us caught on to it.) - Someone said earlier that just because two people disagree on strategy, and even if one of those strategies appear to favour the mafia, that does not mean both people aren't town. I agree, and in general I don't get much use out of lengthy strategy discussions. I confess I am a cow of little brain sometimes and I can't follow some of these strategy discussions, but I don't sweat it too much because: 1. people might be: - mistaken - using poor logic - arguing disingeneously (i.e. deliberately misleading) and if we can't know who is arguing like this and who is not, I choose to remain agnostic (and my efforts are better spent figuring out who is scum, not what arguments scum might be making); and 2. these discussions usually rest on assumptions about other people's motivations (e.g. "A voted this way, so that would mean either X or Y is the case" or "if B were scum, then last night's vote wouldn't have turned out the way it did) that we can't possibly know (note: as assumptions approach certainty, I will be much more convinced by these kinds of things; I just don't have much use for unconfirmable assumptions and find they can lead us down the garden path more often than not); and 3. more critically, the best town lynches I've seen haven't resulted from these sorts of discussions. So if y'all don't mind I will pay attention to the strategy discussions but my decisions will probably be based on my own reasoning, which I will do my best to explain as I come up with it. Having said that about strategy and my own strengths (i.e. that my brain is not strong on untangling the significance of strategy discussions) I will say this about random voting early on: I think random votes in the beginning are good, if only for the future game. In the last game when I came in midway through, I looked back at old posts to build my case and some folks thought that was strange. I think it's the only way to do it: right now, NOBODY has a strategy, but when we read today's discussion next week, after we know a bit more, it will have more meaning. There were a few cases in earlier games where someone pegged a scum early on and rode them until they were lynched. This is a powerful tool both to find scum and to "prove" loyalties later on. But as per my first point above I haven't the slightest idea as to who to vote for now. I quite like rodents and marsupials, and carbon-based life forms in general, so nobody springs obviously to mind. And Gadarene's question: what would I be doing today if I were scum? Probably just what I have been, except I'd be wringing my hands and worrying more, because I'm so lame as a townie that I'd be worried I'd be even lamer as scum. I was so impressed by the winning strategies in M2 (particularly Kat and Storyteller, they both had me absolutely fooled) that I would try to do the same as they, and act as a trusted townie, and hope that I did as well as they. This is what has me most worried. In M2 we spent a lot of time at the beginning lynching people who were vocal, and as a result we (a) lynched a whole lot of townies, and (b) totally missed the scumminess of some of the most vocal people. So I haven't the slightest idea what to do today, and I would be in the exact same position if I was scummy.
