Pleonast-- the board automagically corrected my use of snig ger to sblack person. I was seeing what else it worked on. And it looks like Mal corrected it, making you look like a crazy person. S'cool though. I just checked the boards for the first time since I left work yesterday (post work time is devoted to readying our apartment for my sister in law who is staying with us this weekend), and things look a bit different then when I left. I am going to do a re read and see what I think. Back in a bit.

Suspicious of aggressive posters because, well I guess I think that the pirates will be using the “best defense is a good offense” strategy. I dunno. It just feels right to me. While I agree about suspicion of players who say little, I find your suspicion of aggressive players to be, well, suspicious. I don't know which Mafia games you've followed, but one thing I learned in M2 is that aggressive play is indicative of an engaged player, not a scummy player. It's no indication either way. Its true, I haven't played in any of the earlier SDMB games, but I have played in other Mafia games in other venues (MafiaScum.net, mostly), and my observation has been that the more aggresive players earlier in the game turn often out to be scum. Not always of course, but as an initial observation to start my thinking, I think it remains valid. My vote for you whilst on SS Googlegroups was a random one. This one is not: ++Vote KatiRoo++Of course, being so early in the game, it will be easy for you to assuage my suspicion. I don't really find you that suspicious overall, anyway, but it's early, so I'm tossing in my vote. Fair enough. At this point, all suspicions are valid, and a vote for me is a good way to start - or expand - your assessments of all of the players. Time will tell.

But in the interests of noise to signal. . . [bold]Flying Cow of Doom[/bold]. What do you make of aggressive players on day one? I don't think aggression is a reliable indicator of piracy. I can understand the position that throwing around a lot of votes on the first day might cause a pirate to slip up, but I don't think it's productive. Personally, I'll vote for the person I find to be the most suspicious. For the crew, there is no real information to be had until people start dying, so the best we can do is vote based on our suspicions. The odds are we'll kill a fellow crewman, but that's the way it works. Right now I'm suspicious of Capybara, because her avatar is a pirate and she's a racist! Just kidding. I'm actually suspicious of Mad The Swine. He hasn't really posted anything except voting for Auntbeast because she hasn't registered yet. That kinda stinks like pirate to me. --FCOD

HEY!
I just crafted a whole long post and it didn't post!
Bastard board!
Ok I will have to rewrite it later. To nutshell it (since I have to get back to work) I think agressive play might be a good indicator of scumminess on mafiascum.net, but here it has never been a reliable indicator. Mostly it is people flying under the radar who end up being scum. Now if anyone changes their posting style after this discussion I am going to be VERY suspicious of them but for now:
vote CaerieD
Just so we can get some of these players posting.
So, where ya been Caerie?

Ah. In defense, Mad the Swine, a) I'm procrastinating IRL and b) mud is substance. Still waters contain no information. Unfortunately, anyone who IS PARTICIPATING will look superficially more suspicious than players who are hiding in the shadows. I'm on the radar, unfortunately, but hiding out of range doesn't get the group anywhere. Off to the library-- back in a few hours.

I edited to put the vote in the proper format. Sorry, no more editing for me, SDMB has me spoiled trying to fix my stupid errors.
I'm a woman, revenge suits me.
As for the strong part, well...subtlety is not one of my strong suits.
In defense of my non-pirateyness- I'm easily made seasick. I'm evidently afraid of heights. I'm a big fan of limes and lemons. and, um...gee....trying to prove I'm not a pirate is kinda like trying to prove I'm not a rutabaga.
Don't try to deflect my suspicion of you back on me! The smart ones will see through your evil plans! If MadTheSwine isn't a pirate name, I don't know what is! It is an obvious allusion to pigs being held on pirate ships and deserted islands for food stocks, Mad is what happens when you are out to sea for long periods and The is an acronym for Today Hispanola Expires, clearly indicating he is attempting to survive our cunning wits and destroy the fair citizens.

To nutshell it (since I have to get back to work) I think agressive play might be a good indicator of scumminess on mafiascum.net, but here it has never been a reliable indicator. Now if anyone changes their posting style after this discussion I am going to be VERY suspicious of them but for now: vote CaerieD Just so we can get some of these players posting. So, where ya been Caerie?
[Game off] I'd actually been having some health problems starting yesterday afternoon, so sorry for dropping off the radar. I've been debating subbing out, since I was unsure if I'd be able to keep up with two games while this is going on, but I think I've got it under control for now. If it gets any worse before the end of this Day, I'll be ducking out to try to save everyone from the drama and trouble of a late substitution. Assuming I'm still alive by then, of course. ;D[Game on]
Onto actual content...
There have been a few instances of scum who were aggressive early in a game on the SDMB and those are generally the first to be taken out. Since it's unlikely the scum will do anything outrageously obvious, our first round is going to end up being largely a bunch of fumbling and randomness. We might get scum or we might not. Later on, though, it's going to be useful to go back to, because there'll be one group of people for whom the votes weren't random.
That's not to say that I think we should be voting randomly, though. I'd try to avoid that as much as possible, but at this point reasoning for votes is going to be a lot of things along the lines of, "I think you paraphrased my position poorly. SCUM!"
I'm going to go over what I missed since yesterday and try to come up with something a bit more substantial this afternoon.
