It is the Year 2258, and with the creation of the new Newton-Hawking space drive it is thought that man can now cut the time taken to travel between the stars from months to days.
A giant leap forward for all the races that were involved in its construction. Hyper Light travel was now a certain possibility.
Although not totally ready and operating with a skeleton crew it was decided that the time was right for public demonstration of its capabilites.
You were among the 500 or so invited to the launch of the S.S. Titania, the first Space Liner to be fitted with the drive for the short hop between Earth and Alpha Centurai, which is expected to take only a few hours, instead of the week or so using more conventional star drives.
The initial take off was successful, but when the new drive was engaged it all started to go wrong.
Person or alien unknown had tampered with the Star Drive and as it was engaged certain criminal forces leapt into action looking to sieze the new technology for itself.
As the ship moved through space a running battle started up between the criminals and the light security forces that were stationed on the Titania with you and the other passengers caught in the middle.
It was a short but bloody affair and as the Titania moved back into real space, far off course, only 20 of you remain alive. The crew are all dead but as the last of the pirates sank to his knees dying, a signal crackled through his communicator.
"Activate Infiltration Team. Secure the ship. Docking to commence in 20 days".
It wasn't over. As each of you looked around, you came to the certain conclusion that some of the remaining guests were not guests at all. Some of you were members of this Infiltration Team!
However, checking with the central computer, the auto-repair systems were operational and would complete in 10 Earth standard days. If someone was around, they could order the computer to return the ship to Earth.
If that someone was an honest passenger though.
After a moments discussion, a plan was formed. This Space ship still had a working computer and although it was designed to be fast, still contained some stasis booths. The stasis booth allowed the computer to store a sentient creatures mind in case of brain damage during a long trip. If someone was placed in a booth, the computer could read their mind and so determine if the person was a member of the Infiltration team.
One problem remained, once a person entered the stasis booth, they could not be extracted for a month. Anyone entering the booth would be helpless and unknowing over the intervening days regardless of what happened.
The decision was clear.
To vote each day for a single person to be put into stasis and have their mind scanned.
To hope that each day you could find the Infiltration Team before they took control.
To stay alive...
