And Chia Bingo Manager was dotchan's suggestion. Since NAF accidentally started "Cows" at 61, I swiped the 60 postcount for that one.

All this football talk and no-one has mentioned that the rugby world cup has started? I'll quite happily talk about the Rugby World Cup. Far more important for the UK and Aus than the NFL. And the chances of England winning this time around are really, really small. I reckon New Zealand might finally do it this time after promising so much for the last few tournaments.

Ah, the stench of politics in sport.
I don't really care one way or the other about east coast teams, but then the choice of a sports team to support is rarely a rational choice. If it were, no-one would ever support (say) Darlington FC.
"Because I was born there and it's my local club" is not a rational reason, by the way. Perfectly valid, but not rational.
Me? The football club I support was chosen because my mother told me to. I was two or three at the time. Is that rational? No. Valid? Yes.

No. Valid? Yes. Well, you have to remember, there's true reason, and then there's sports reason. We're invariably working in an irrational area because fanaticism is irrational. Logically, everyone should just be a bandwagon fan, but in sports, banwagon fans are generally looked at as human garbage. Instead, we subject ourselves to rivalries based entirely on minor preferences because, they're the home team, they were the home team where you group up, they were my mother's/father's favorite team. For instance, my fanaticism of the Redskins is purely subjective... they're the home team, and they're my father's favorite team, so it's all I knew growing up. Thus, it naturally follows that I hate the Cowboys, because they're their arch-rivals. My hatred for the Broncos spawned mostly from similar reasoning (IIRC, however many years ago, they were beating several of the teams I liked in the playoffs/superbowl and John Elway is a jerk). Of course, I also started hating them more when I found out they were cheaters (IIRC, a few years ago, it was discovered they were seriously circumventing the salary cap during their two superbowl victories). Now, the Patriots... they're a completely different story. Sure, I didn't like them when they beat a few teams I didn't like. And, had there not been other reasons, I probably would have let it slide. But the circumstantial evidence is just TOO strong, IMO, that their first superbowl victory was a fix. Add on the complete ass-kissing of them every year since then; I swear, every year I see at least half a dozen sports analysts say something like "I dunno, I think the Patriots could go undefeated this year." Then add on that Bill Bellichick is a complete ass and a poor sport (for instance, often doesn't even shake an opposing coach's hand after a defeat), but is touted as a genius even though he failed miserably in his previous coaching stint, and this time, AFAICT, at least cheating if not getting help from outside sources. Oh, in fact, the whole team is a bunch of poor sports (look at what happened after their victory over San Diego in the play offs last year). I won't mention why Tom Brady is dispicable. The only reason I could see anyone still liking them is if they already were fans before all this stuff, and they have the fan-blinders on.

Truly - I'm not a fan of the Raiders because they happen to be the best team in football, it's just that I grew up in their area. (Mostly ... their years in exile don't count against them). Spaceman Spiff, anyone who hates the Broncos is fine by me. As for the Patriots, there's still lingering hatred over one particular game. Link. That's directed as much as the refs as at the Patriots, though.

I'm reviewing the game of Crazies (the one here, that is). Does anyone who was in that know if there was a summary post of players and who their final roles were? I'm sure I'll be able to get it somehow, but I'd like to try and run through it knowing who was who.

Amen. And that damn Kick in the snow! Poor Raiders But yeah, I happened to get interested in football, and I liked teams with Strong Defenses. That's why my first two teams i liked were Ravens/Raiders back in the day. Then the Ravens went on to win the Superbowl a year later, and I was all "huzzah!" and that's what really got me into the sport. But I consider myself a casual fan. My local team should be the 'skins, but I consider the Ravens a "local" team too, since they're from MD, and I'm in VA. The love of the colts came from watching their games 4-5 years ago. When they were good, but not good enough for playoffs. Just watching them my jaw DROPPED. I had never seen a team SO good at making these crazy TD passes, and that's when I realized their secret: Their awesome Defense was simply the fact that they had a STRONG offense to the point where they didn't need a great defense. With that attitude, I still say I love defensive teams, Ravens and Colts. It's just the colts do it in a very un-orthodox view (Strong Offense= Decent Defense). Though I'm excited to see their defense has been picking up the slack in recent months since last years playoffs

Instead, we subject ourselves to rivalries based entirely on minor preferences because, they're the home team, they were the home team where you group up, they were my mother's/father's favorite team. Well yes, I can totally agree. I support the football team I do because of that incdent. However, as a result I have a serious dislike of our closest geographical rivals. I also follow the FA cup (a single-elimination competition) watching for news of four or five teams being knocked out. Why? They've won that competition more than us, or one time less, or simply for revenge because they're the only team to have beaten us in the final of the competition ever. The Cowboys I understand, because a friend of mine is a Redskins fan as well. The Broncos? I haven't heard these allegations before; American football is not a primary interest of people over here. The trouble is that as far as I can see, a lot of the contract structure for the highest paid players is designed to help the team get round the salary cap. (Frankly I think that salary caps are a good thing and would like to see them introduced into the Premier League over here.) Neither have I heard this. Is there some sort of discussion or summary that shows this? From neutral sources, please (or as near-neutral as you know.) If you can convince me of that I might join you in disliking the Patriots, as I am unfond of cheats. Or, like me, they are neutral and have no knowledge of your reasons. FWIW the team I support is based in the US city I've always wanted to see most since I was a teenager. Nice and rational. I don't particularly care that they consistently finish third in their division nowadays.

I've really found it amusing Dotchan, that you got FOS'ed on day 1. Because when you made your posts at night and such, I too was like.... Man. She's REALLY scummy even when she's NOT playing the game. That's why to see someone FoS you, I thought it was a joke. =( What an Awesomely bad Skill. To always appear Scummie even if you're NOT playing the game. You could be the first Sub to be substitutionally lynched from beyond the game. [Yes, I just made up that word. It was funny].

(Frankly I think that salary caps are a good thing and would like to see them introduced into the Premier League over here.) I don't have a problem with manipulating contracts to get around the salary cap, because it's still playing within the rules, and money that is paid is always counted. For instance, a signing bonus can give a player money immediately, but it can be spread over several years. If the player retires or is cut before those several years are up, it still impacts the salary cap. OTOH, circumventing the salary cap means doing things like using third parties to pay money or just paying them under the table. San Fransisco and Denver are the only two teams of which I'm aware have been caught doing this. I'm not sure if I can find a neutral discussion, but since it would involve a lot of work, I can post my evidence (mind you, it's all circumstantial) for a fix. As far as being cheats, that article I linked should at least point out that it's a very distinct possibility.

From my outsider's perspective it feels like some of the accounting procedures that are in place are there just to allow clubs to manipulate the cap rules. Please don't put yourself to a lot of work on my account. If it's not a short task don't worry. I'll dig around for the info.

Fixed link. I knew most anyone who follows American football would know what I was talking about, but I thought I'd post the link to help others. Of course I ended up using SDMB link style. Incidentally it's probably part of the evidence of favoritism towards the Patriots Spaceman Spiff is mentioning. The link shows the whole NFL Films recap of the game, and does show the moment of controversy - whether the ball was fumbled or not. The rule itself is patently dumb - since it's all too often difficult to tell when a ball is being pulled in and when it's actually into the body and being run with (which makes the difference). Also, the instant replay requires incontrovertible evidence to overturn - the ruling on the field should have stayed. Most tellingly, the ref stated the entirely wrong reason - "the arm was going forward" when it wasn't. He was lucky enough to be able to cover that with an excuse afterward. Thanks, dotchan - thou shalt be exalted next chance I have.

On a side note:
Lemme quote myself here:
" :Ducks behind the Bar for the oncoming onslaught for his ideas:"
I totally love how that smiley changes that sentence and makes it a whole lot more ambigous at how dirty it could be at what i'm doing behind the bar. I really meant to say : ducks. But I like the :Fucks possibility too. the Sucks not so much. or Hucks. Bucks? Lucks? Anyways, back to the main thread, i have a feeling i'm gonna get broasted soon.
