Benign neglect.
Although, given that it's dead? I suppose that neglect ended up not being so benign.
This is, by the way, the third mint plant I've managed to kill.

In my limited experience, mint either overruns an area, or it dies quickly. There's no middle ground. I'm currently overrun with morning glories. I put them on a lattice, and they've self-seeded the whole area. Fortunately, they can't compete against grass when mowed.
