Day 1
Sept 10, 2007 18:28:57 GMT -5
Post by Gir! on Sept 10, 2007 18:28:57 GMT -5
Blue Sun and the Alliance government appear to be up to their old tricks again. Throughout Alliance space, both core worlds and border worlds, people have been disappearing, some of them for a few hours, some for days or weeks, some appear to have vanished permanently. Of those that return, some of them seem to be perfectly normal, while others are acting oddly, not quite themselves. And not a one of them can remember where they were (some don't even realize they were missing!).
People have begun to look suspiciously at others, not just the strangers passing through the port, but at their own friends and neighbors.
And it's at this port that the Firefly class ship Serenity has landed, for supplies and repairs.Day 1 has started. Night 2 will start no later than 10 days from today, approximately 3:30-4:00 PM Pacific Time (5:30 -6:00 PM Central Time). With 28 players, it takes 15 votes to lynch. When the 15th vote is cast, Day will end automatically (i.e. no countdown--it's an Insta-Lynch). If no majority is reached by Day's end, no lynch will occur. I think that covers it. Strategizing may begin. NAF may pop in to yell at me for missing something. ;D NAF edit note: popping in to yell at Kat for not capitalizing all three of my initials ;D

Well, we can maybe speculate on how many sides there are and so forth based on the show itself, no?
I watched it but forgot a lot of things. Now, it was Mal's crew, the government, and what were those scary dudes... the reivers or something? I need a Firefly ner... er, fan to help out.

Post by Hockey Monkey! on Sept 10, 2007 19:09:45 GMT -5
This is my first closed set-up game, so I really have no idea what sort of strategy to employ at this point. It's probably a bad idea to try to figure out roles and such as only people in the know would know, and talking about it would be giving away what they know, you know. With the very little I know about the show should I even try to hypothesize the sides? At least two...a regular crew faction and a regular scum faction...but maybe Reavers? Anyone else got 2 cents to throw at this one?

I agree with not discussing town power roles, especially after day 1 of M5. I'll speculate that NAF and Kat didn't do too outlandish a setup... crew faction would of course be the good guys, the government/alliance would be the scum faction. The reavers would have to factor in somehow, I'd think. They could be a second scum faction?

vote: Idle Thoughts for screwing up my apprentice counter-claim in m5. Hahaha, great. Oh well, no yelling this time. Yeah, this closed setup is harder, but possibly may bring better strategizing techniques? And I have a clarification question...So majority needed or else no lynch, does that mean we need to have fifteen people all vote on the same person or just one person having more votes than everyone else?

Plurality doesn't cut it, it has to be a majority. I like that setup better than a plurality.
Also, it goes without saying that we have to be very careful when we get close to a majority, so as not to hammer and end the day early.

Ok, this is my first ever mafia game, so take this with a grain of salt. All I know is the firefly-verse. But it seems that there could be: crew(good and bad...think jayne, good sometimes bad other times), passengers (good or bad) alliance (bad), land-grubbers (good or bad), and of course reavers, bad all the time. Have I muddied the mudder waters enough? I am so

I accidentally posted the following in the "a bit about firefly" thread, where I meant it to go here: more on ReaversI think they have to be accounted for in this game. You could have a serial killer type, but I think they are most likely a faction all their own. Also, I don't remember this part, but the wiki article mentions that they sometimes leave their victims alive, and the victims themselves become reavers? Perhaps they have some sort of recruitment mechanism.

wtf*, well, we can presume that there must be at least one investigative type role, or else we wouldn't have had a night start. So there's at least one good guy who has an idea of who to or not to vote for. On the other hand, there's a handful of scum who know who not to vote for.
The random/psuedorandom voting thing has been discussed to death, I'd really not enjoy rehashing that conversation.

I never really understood how he got to be that way, but I do remember the episode where Mal & crew find a young man/teenager alive on a ship full of dead people, and he's normal at first but then he turns into a Reaver while in isolation or something like that.

They were trying to save a planetfull of people but fucked them up into cannibals instead. Genetic manipulation? if you haven't watched the movie.) Going back to watch the end to be sure, brb.

Shouldn't you be off deciding the outcome of 2.5 months of hard work and thousands upon thousands of man-hours invested, all of it coming down to a single decision made just by you? No pressure...

Post by Boozahol Squid, P.I. on Sept 10, 2007 20:34:51 GMT -5
At least in these first few days, I don't think hammering would be nearly as bad as not lynching. If we get lucky and nail an Alliance member with a lynch early, the hammering players votes will help distinguish Crew from Scum. (this, of course, is based on my understanding that the loss of a scum early in the game is less helpful than an excuse later in the game for the scum). If there are any Reavers in this game, I'll bet credits to crackers that there's one, and he's a Psychopath.
Now, as far as first day voting goes: I've only ever played this game live, and first votes tend to be based on hearing some slight shifting as Scum try to silently inform the Mod who they want to kill. I'm going to go out on a limb and throw out an initial vote, based on nothing. (If anyone wants to instruct me what I'm supposed to be looking for in first day scumtells, I'll be happy to listen)
Vote: whatthefrak

Post by Parzival on Sept 10, 2007 21:56:11 GMT -5
This is my first closed setup - the thing is I can't even be sure of what factions exist. Anything I say to align myself could get me killed. That said, this is a game of Mafia. I can guess that there's at least one group that can conspire, perform night-shas, and more importantly has special knowledge - they know who is and isn't on their side. Maybe they don't have all those things together, but they probably do. Before we get too jumpy, remember there's probably also people, who also have special knowledge, who want to keep us from getting killed. I hope. If there is one or more Reaver, they're most likely out to kill everyone but themselves, and we can all oppose them. But they probably don't have special knowledge, so it's not like we can determine anything about them yet. Also, on the Reaver origin in Serenity : There was a drug intended to pacify the population that the Alliance tested on a planet - I think in the air or water supply. Unfortunately a tiny portion of the population reacted badly - very badly - and become violent psychopaths. For the rest, the drug worked too well and they allowed themselves to be massacred.
But in the Series, there is the interesting point that at least one person who was exposed to the violence of the Reavers ended up becoming like them. To put that in this game would unbalance it too much, IMO.
