I wonder if experienced players are more likely to have been assigned powers or scum. Let me rephrase that for clarity - I'm wondering if most of the newbies are town, and more of the scum and power roles went to experienced players since they know what they're doing.

I wonder if experienced players are more likely to have been assigned powers or scum. In most games the roles are handed out randomly ( randed) so don't bet on it. Thank you lightfoot

Good thing you can PM the Mod with any questions you have! Idle will throw a new player in a role just as fast as an old scarred one

A "lurker" is a person who reads discussions on a message board but rarely or never participates actively. Some mafia players believe in the "lynch all lurkers" theory (meaning they vote to lynch the player who rarely participates in the discussion of the game). I generally do not lynch lurkers in Day 1. However, this is a big game and there are so many newbie players, and it is easy for a lurker to hide. To encourage participation, I am going to "watch" if there will be any lurkers. As a numbers guy I always use excel a lot. I have a google doc that counts the posts of all 60 players in the game and Idle Thoughts the MOD. docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhIF2QGffiNhdGZDS2RHczl3SlNYLXhzb3QyTWNPLVE#gid=0Everyone should be able to see it. Column A is the player name and column B is the total post number. If the link does not work let me know. Day 0 posts were counted, and I will update the Day 1 post count regularly.

I wonder if experienced players are more likely to have been assigned powers or scum. my thoughts as well seeing as us noobs would't know what to do with powers ha ha Some Thoughts by Gadarene on How to Play DetectiveIf you have been given the role of Detective: congratulations! You have one of the most important roles in the game. If Detective works in this game like it works in most games I've played, then you can choose someone every night to investigate, and you will be told at the end of the night what that person's alignment is. This is a huge and awesome thing, because Townies have the advantage in numbers but are at a severe disadvantage on the informational front, so investigation results are sort of like being handed the keys to the kingdom and getting to peek behind the scenes. Once you receive the results of your investigation, you have to decide how (and when) you will impart this knowledge to the rest of the Town. There are several schools of thought on this, and I don't propose to delve into them deeply now, except to say: The detective has two overriding and somewhat conflicting motivations. First, he/she wants to disseminate the knowledge he/she has gained. Every confirmed Townie is someone that the scum cannot mislynch (thus making it harder for the scum to win). Every confirmed scum puts the Town one step closer to victory. Second, however, the detective wants to stay alive! If you are a Detective, the scum would very much like to find you and kill you. The sooner they achieve this, the fewer investigations you can accomplish and the less help you will be to town. A detective who investigates someone as Town on Night One and then outs the results of their investigation in the thread on Day Two will help the Town in the short term by imparting the information they have learned, but will more than likely be killed soon after that by the scum, and will not be given the chance to make additional investigations on Night Two, Night Three, and so forth. On the other hand, a Detective who stays silent about their investigation results may avoid detection by the scum, but risks dying without communicating any investigation results to the Town. It's a tricky balance, and I can talk more about how to navigate it later. One way that Detectives try to walk this line is by "breadcrumbing" the results of their investigations in the thread, so that when they're killed people can go back and figure out their investigation results. For example, if I'm killed on Night Two, and people go back and see that on Day Two I said "I am absolutely positive that Mahaloth is town," this would be a breadcrumb about my investigation results. It helps to be a little more subtle about it than that, though, or else you risk being discovered and killed by the scum. Suffice to say: don't get caught, but don't die without leaving the Town anything to go on regarding your investigations, since you're one of our greatest weapons. Just as important as imparting your investigation results is choosing the right targets to investigate to begin with. Remember: you're not necessarily trying to investigate scum. If you learn that a certain player is definitively Town, that can be just as helpful as learning that a certain player is definitively Scum, for reasons I explained in my previous post (every cleared player makes it harder for the scum to get the number of mislynches that they will need to win). So if you investigate someone and they come up as Town, don't despair -- that's a great result too! When choosing your investigative targets, here are some things to consider. As you'll see, these are all variations on similar themes: (1) Try to investigate people that you (and others) have a difficult time reading. The marginal value of your investigation is greater when you definitively establish the alignment of someone whose playstyle makes it hard for you to otherwise figure them out. (2) To that end, try not to investigate people who are viewed universally scummy or extremely likely to be Town. The ideal investigative target is someone who many people have no strong opinion on one way or the other, in part because people who ARE universally viewed as Town or Scum are more likely to be killed soon anyway, either via lynch (by Town, if they're viewed as scummy) or by nightkill (by Scum, if they're viewed as very Townie). (3) Which leads us to: Try to pick investigative targets that you think are likely to be alive for a long time. Ideally, you want to investigate people who will still be alive when you are killed or when you otherwise decide to reveal your investigation results. If you investigate someone as Town on Night One but they're killed by the Scum on Night Two, this doesn't help Town because your reveal of your investigation will have no value in preventing that person's mislynch going forward. Consider picking people who do not seem to be the lightning rod of discussion, people who don't particularly stand out in a way that is likely to get them killed one way or the other before too long. (4) By the same token, though, you should consider investigating people whose alignment (when revealed) will have the biggest benefit for Town. In that respect, consider prioritizing the investigation of experienced players over new players, as long as doing so does not run afoul of (1), (2), and (3) above. Experienced players might more easily fool the Town (thus making it especially valuable to expose them as Scum), and having one or more confirmed Townies who are experienced and who can lead/direct the Town in the middle stages of the game is extremely valuable as well. Those are some thoughts on playing Detective. People should feel free to add to this and expand upon it.

You can vote/unvote at any time during the Day. It is your option to vote early or late in the Day. Theoretically, not voting is also an option, but it is generally a bad one as you will be labeled as a lurker. In some games there are some powers that make certain player(s) unable to vote/unvote, such as the silencing power. Since we have secret roles in this game, it is unknown if there will be such power in this game.

Not sure if anyone is actually reading my posts, but one more thing:
A Short Note About Being a Vanilla Townsperson
Anyone who is a vanilla (unpowered, regular) Townsperson, listen up: You have an awesome role also. I love it when I'm a vanilla Townsperson. Your job is as follows: (1) solve the game -- try to find scum and clear Townies; and (2) clear yourself -- try to do work to show everyone else that you're a Townie, so that they don't try to lynch you. If you succeed in these two things, you will probably be killed by the Scum. This is the single greatest honor that can be bestowed upon a vanilla Townsperson! You want to be killed by the Scum. You want to be so right about things and so clearly a Townsperson that the Scum grit their teeth and try to get rid of you, because they don't want you around any more. If you manage to accomplish this, you've done your job.
Recognize the following: First, most people are Townspeople, statistically. Second, all reads, leans, and opinions that you have should be dynamic (subject to change upon further thought, evidence, or developments) and probabilistic (based upon likelihoods, not certainties). With that in mind, do not be afraid to have opinions! Do not be afraid to change your mind (and do not be afraid to explain why your mind has changed). Do not be afraid to be suspicious of people! Do not be afraid of being suspected by people! But always remember that most people are trying to solve the game just like you -- don't be reflexively suspicious, and work together when possible.
Oh, and have fun.

I wonder if experienced players are more likely to have been assigned powers or scum. I use random.org... so it's totally random who gets what. I'm on the noob-team. What do we do? Just pick anyone and vote? I know we're looking to lynch a scum person, but how do we know if we're right? What happens if you die? I tell everyone what a person was when they are dead. I just re-checked the Day 0 thread and there are several players who did not confirm. Of the 60 players on the player list (61 players, #26 mel dropped out): 32. bec33. adorasaurusrex34. Inner Stickler (posted in Day 1 before this post) 39. Patricia (posted in Day 1 before this post) 41. allyjayne MOD Question: would anything happen to these unconfirmed players if they do not show up at all in Day 1?They'd probably be subbed out and other players will take their place. Vote count: Pleonast - 3 votes (CatInASuit, BillMc, Meeko) Meeko -2 votes (Inner Stickler, Pleonast) GnarlyCharlie - 1 vote (Guiri) dizzymrslizzy - 1 vote (Suburban Plankton)

I would also guess, that the point of this whole Mafia game was for Chris to draw more people into it. So I would hope that if a newb got assigned an important role Chris would jump in and tell us "you can do XYZ here"

I also wonder why Idle opened this up to new/old players. I think this might have worked a lot better as a completely newb game, because there is a dynamic here that is very weird and I think makes the game a lot harder than it needs to be.

Better check with the moderator if this violates the "you are not allowed to talk with anyone OFF THESE BOARDS about the game" rule.In other words, please post notes in the game thread instead of in an editable (which we're not allowed to do) document off this board. Pleonast, I understand the importance of following the rules in this game, but intepreting the rules in an extreme way is not following the rules. First of all, the link is to a spreadsheet and I do not "talk with anyone" with it. The spreadsheet contains the name of the players and lots of numbers. I am a numbers guy, but if I decide to talk to someone, I am sure I would not use any numbers-only language. Secondly, the spreadsheet is readable by the public, not just a part of the players in this game, and you only get the link to the spreadsheet in the game thread. In other words, there is no outside the thread communication. No one else can "talk" to me with the spreadsheet because I am the only one who can edit it, and any edition I made with the spreadsheet is accessible to all players. Also, no one else is forced to use the spreadsheet to play the game. Thirdly, I am posting all my notes in this game thread, but obviously there is no way putting the spreadsheet in the thread. If there is a way for me to put it in the thread I would do it, and the substantial contents of the spreadsheet would not change. Furthermore (I'm not sure "fourthly" is a word), do you think it is a violation if a player post a link to a mafia wikipedia page? It is true that the spreadsheet is outside the game thread, but so is a wikipedia page or any other mafia rules explanation pages, and all web pages are editable. If a web page explaining what "WIFOM" means is available, I see no point that we should not be allowed to add the link to the webpage because the webpage is outside this game thread and is editable. Lastly, I use the spreadsheet myself, but decide to provide it for the convenience of all the players because this is a game with lots of newbie players. If you think there is a risk that the spreadsheet would be an out-of-game communication way and want it to be taken out from all other players, let me know. I will take it off in one minute.
