My working theory is that the Merc has no idea he or she is the Merc. Pollux assigned someone to the designation for the sole purpose of (randomly?) limiting the Merc's "lifetime" in this game. The Merc's activities do not alter the activities of the player assigned the Merc. It is above my pay grade to figure out how role blocking/redirecting might work out with the Merc. That makes sense, but the connection to the player would have to be only that the Merc as an entity survives as long as that player does. No role mechanics could interact with it. Only the winning bidder and the Mod-provided color and PMs have any interaction with it. So maybe we're all correct. :if-only-we-had-the-sciencewin-smiley:

And now that we chose correctly wrt Silver Jan, Dizzy's fate really might be tied to how people interpret the Merc. I know I'm harping on this, but I don't know if the implications are sinking in with everyone.

Sorry folks, I'm really not contributing much to this game - work is getting in the way. Apologies for not having the time.
I did win the Merc bid on N3.
My claim is below - I've used my powers, so I'm vanilla town now. I boosted KidV, Red, Pizza respectively.

DarkCookies. Mhaye, what do you mean that one of them had to have planted the lure? I wwas talking about a role in the Halloween party - Storyteller's, iirc. He had the capacity to turn other players into a Nexus for a particular type of role. To do that he had to plant a little metal rod that drew every action of a specified type. A tracker would have seen him visit the player as well as everyone who took that kind of action that same Night. Other kinds of action were completely unaffected. I suppose the marking of Peeker as the player for killers to converge on (assuming there is one, which my brain did this morning - I blame the hour faling into i-time) could have been a Day action. It might even have been peeker's own role. I liked the role, and I think one or both the Gastards might have put it in to see what it does in this game.

The scum must not have recruited, since the last time I checked.
3 scum at the end of the day.

very nice! interesting though that she doesn't have a killing role. We get the correct result! for the wrong reasons. I suspect that happens a lot in Mafia Games. So she was only able to attempt a recruit one time? And used it on Night One? And lost the chance when Peeker was killed? Silverjan had the Creepy Doll. I wonder if there are any further ramifications from that? a dead scum is always a good result no matter how convoluted it may be in us getting there (there really is a plan, i swear - just hang with us a couple of years and we might let you in on it). i think she came to recruit and had nothing to do with the kill. either way she was rightfully toast. now i wonder what the fuck the merc is doing. protect or kill. and who the frack is it toNight? methinks i have a gander. mod question: is the merc totally clueless about the implications of the role? i expect a passage of wind from our esteemed mog.

ok, here is a snippet. i love drawing this shit out.
from the mog:
3. Should The Mercenary, whoever they are, get killed before they complete their mission, you will (rightfully, because you're really the one true mercenary goshdangit!) take over their powers but not their win condition when you are live. It will also be publically stated that you've taken over working as the Mercenary should this event happen.
and also this:
from the mog:
Oh. One thing I forgot to include in your role PM (sorry, lot of work doing this myself).
Because of your fierce one-sided rivalry with The Mercenary, you can't bid on him. That would make things too easy.
heh heh. i got the most annoying role in the world.
just thought it might provide some fodder, so to speak.
and one last snippet from the mog:
1. You can't die.
obviously there is a shit load of *redacted* (not removed) stuff.

i think she came to recruit and had nothing to do with the kill. Why? if she had the opportunity to recruit me to one side or the other the game is broken. seriously i am ironman or deadpool. pick your poison. if you are scum then if i am ironman it is just a matter of time. and if you are town then do you really want deadpool in charge of the NKs. heh heh.

Well that doesn't really indicate that the Merc is mechanic as opposed to person by my reckoning. Otherwise you would have taken over Guiri's powers and be publicly announced as the Mercenary when he was killed. Or is that something that is explained in the redacted parts?

I understand your confusion, but Peeker's interpretation of that section of his role is where the disconnect starts, I believe. It starts here, where Peeker responds to some of my WAGs about the Merc: i thought kidv allegedly protected himself with the merc power. and i know this is magic baggy. but i have every reason to believe that the merc is an additional power granted to the highest bidder and not a specific person in this game. Apparently he is basing that belief on this item 3 from his apparent role PM: 3. Should The Mercenary, whoever they are, get killed before they complete their mission, you will (rightfully, because you're really the one true mercenary goshdangit!) take over their powers but not their win condition when you are live. It will also be publically stated that you've taken over working as the Mercenary should this event happen. But, if the first of the above statements from Peeker is correct, then when Guiri was killed, since he possessed the winning bid for the Merc at the time that he died and before it could be used, he would have embodied the entity of the Merc and Peeker's Clause 3 would have gone into effect. So in light of this information from Peeker, I'm inclined to change my WAG as to how the Merc works and that the Merc is actually a player, and not merely a mechanic/power that moves from person to person. What I don't understand is why Peeker is interpreting his PM the way he is. (My apologies for accidentally posting some of this response in Day 4 whilst I was gathering up the quotes.)

Guiri possessed the winning bid; he was not the mercenary. Assuming peeker is quoting his pm accurately, I see no reason why guiri's death should have activated peeker's status as backup mercenary.

You're assuming there are vanilla scum to send out. That's not an assumption I'm willing to make at this point. And even if there are vanilla scum, there are lots of reasons why Silver Jan could have been chosen to make the kill. For example, she could have been selected randomly, or maybe the other scum were catching some heat and they thought Silver Jan would be the least likely to be tracked.
If she wasn't there to kill you, how do you account for the 3 different ways that you died, considering Meeko only saw 3 people in your room, and assuming that Meeko is being truthful?
If your answer is "The Merc" I'm going to have to require an adult beverage.
