WATCHMEN Mafia
The Rules
The Rules
Below you will find the basic rules of the game. Some are familiar, and some represent modest departures from usual practice; please read them carefully, and feel free to ask if anything is unclear.
1. The Set-Up
This is a closed set-up. It may, or may not, be a no-vanilla set-up. Some roles may or may not initially appear to be vanilla but have hidden or unlockable abilities/quirks. At any given time, each role will have one of four different alignments, as follows:
The Watchmen are this game’s Town equivalent. All have the following win condition: “You win when all of the Uncorrupted (the game’s Scum equivalent) and all PFK (see below) have been eliminated from the game.”
The Uncorrupted are this game’s Scum equivalent. All have the following win condition: "You win when the total number of Uncorrupted is greater than or equal to half the total number of living players, and all PFK (see below) have been eliminated from the game.”
Third Party Players are players that are neither Town- nor Scum-aligned but are not a threat to the win condition of either side. They may be Survivors, or Jesters, or who knows what… the specifics of each win condition may vary, but third party players can win along with either the Watchmen or the Uncorrupted.
PFK Players are players that are neither Town nor Scum and ARE a threat to the win condition of either side. They may be Serial Killers, Mad Bombers, or something altogether different. A PFK player may or may not be able to win alongside some third party players, but if a PFK player wins, then all Town and Scum players do not.
The terminology above will be used consistently throughout all role and other PMs and in-game color, including role reveals. In cases where the entire subset of players who are neither Town nor Scum is intended, the phrase “Third Party/PFK” will be used.
2. Posting
There are no post restrictions. As long as you are alive, you may post whatever you like, wherever you like, whenever you like. You may quote your role PM, and any PM sent to you by the moderators. You may discuss strategy by Day or by Night. If you have access to outside boards, you may post to them on any subject at any time. If someone claims a post restriction of any kind, they are lying; lynch them.
PLEASE NOTE: You are also permitted to edit your posts. Other players may frown upon a choice to do so, but the Moderator will not intervene in any case of post editing.
3. Recruitment
There may be various methods, not to be disclosed, by which the alignment of certain players may change. However, any alignment changes in this game will be strictly voluntary; no player will ever be forced to change alignment under any circumstances.
4. Day/Night Cycle
In most cases, a Day will last five real-life days (beginning on Saturday afternoons and ending on Thursday afternoon), and the Night will last two real-life days. There is no in-game method of extending or shortening any Day or Night. Days or Nights may be extended or shortened at the discretion of the moderator to account for out-of-game or meta-game situations (holidays, board outages, etc).
5. Voting and the Lynch
Voting will be done using blue text. Bold-facing and separating onto an individual line are preferred for moderator convenience, but not required. Only votes in blue will count. It is permitted to vote “no lynch” should that appear to be the best plan.
Unvoting will use red text. Only one active vote is permitted at any one time per player. If a player places a blue text vote and subsequently places another without unvoting the original player, the original vote will continue to count until it is removed.
The player with the highest number of votes at the lynch deadline will be lynched (if “no lynch” has received more votes than any player, no lynch will occur). In the event of a tie, the player who was first to reach the vote number at which the tie occurred for the last time will be lynched.
6. Powers
There may be Day powers and/or Night powers. All powers resolve at Dawn or Dusk, according to a pre-established order of events. If you anticipate absence during a given Day or Night, it is permitted to submit actions in advance, which may be changed at any time prior to the deadline.
7. Participation
There will be no hard and fast rules regarding participation, except this one: please participate. The moderator will determine the adequacy of each player’s participation in a context-sensitive fashion, and will issue warnings, prompts, and removals as necessary. All discussion about a player’s participation level will take place in private; the moderator will not discuss participation, prods, or potential modkills in the game thread under any circumstances.
Broadly speaking, all moderator action, notably modkill, is subject to the discretion of the moderator. NOTE: There will be no voting requirement whatsoever. As long as you’re posting substantively, you don’t have to vote at all, ever, as far as the moderator is concerned.
8. Color, and Special Info for this Game
Be it here announced: the game color will contain hints. It will also contain red herrings, misdirections, and blatant lies. Attempt to interpret it at your own risk. At the end of every color post (ie, at Dawn and Dusk and on rare occasions in between) will be a dashed line, like this:
-----
Anything below said line may be considered official moderatorial communication and will always be 100% accurate; this is where death reveals, scheduling information, and the like will be found. Anything above the line should be considered color, where anything goes.
Also, prospective players should be warned that while this game is, at heart, just another game of Mafia, there are a few unusual mechanics. It is most certainly not a bastard game – everything’s above board and everything is ultimately knowable – but neither will it be a vanilla game.
