Taking my cue from capybara's excellent question currently lost amidst the waves on the rapidly capsizing SS Googlegroups, here's an inquiry to get our Day One juices flowing.
Everyone: what would you do, strategy-wise, on the first Day if you were a pirate? You may answer as fulsomely or as curtly as you like, with humor or vitriol or what-have-you. You may even choose not to answer, as long as you understand that what you do not say can be used against you on the grounds that it might incriminate you.
I'll go first, of course. I think I'd play pretty much as I'm playing now, although I'd probably be less chatty (mark it up to procrastination, in part---do you really want to be writing a judicial opinion on the various intricacies of immigration law?). I also wouldn't be so free as I so far have been with my thoughts and observations regarding the successful scum tactics (and misguided townie gambits) I've seen while blessed with perfect information in Mafia III. It seems like the town keeps falling into the same (or similar) ruts from game to game, making the same (or similar) mistakes, and I'm determined to limit that to the best of my ability this time around.
Anyway, that's me. More as I think of it. What about you?

I already answered in considerable detail about what I suspect a pirate would do on the other board. I think this might be more productive if we used this line of questioning to get people out of the closet a bit, concentrating attentions (i.e. ganging up) if need be. We need to get to know everyone a bit better, you know? Crew members and pirates both.

It is clear to me that the best strategy for the scum on the first day is just to stay under the radar... that is, don't be one of the leaders, don't be one of the lurkers. What I've seen from the past couple of games is that suspicions from the first day can last for a while, and if the scum can stay out of suspicion on the first day, they can subtlely manipulate the seeds of suspicion on the first day into full-blown paranoia on following days. Thus, I expect my vote will fall on someone that is completely devoid of any suspicious action.

If I were scum, I'd probably try to avoid any sudden departures from the patterns I've already developed. I tend to be a low-key player and being more aggressive probably wouldn't do me any favors if I was scum. So in the beginning, I'd probably start out quite slow and just feel things out. I probably wouldn't want to be one of the first to toss out a vote. When I did vote, I'd likely wait until two or three others had first.

Everyone: what would you do, strategy-wise, on the first Day if you were a pirate? I would try to forget that I was a pirate, and play exactly as if I were vanilla crew. Someone's going to FOS you for mining for suggestions for effective pirate play, but it won't be me.

Why don't we have this as part of the actual game thread. It is a good discussion for the game. (I am assuming that the Day 1 Day 2 etc are the only actual game threads and everything else is secondary and "out of the game")

I was assuming that anything that appeared on this board is fair game, and that nothing is "out of game." Since we don't have the SDMB-imposed limitation of a single game thread, I think it's kind of nice to be able to conduct different discussions in different threads. But it does make the time-ordering of posts less readily apparent, and voting will need to be restricted to a single thread, less we drive Malacandra mad.

We can only vote in one thread, so we should try and keep all discussion that might lead to votes to a single thread. But that is Mal's call really I suppose.

My guess is I'd look at the (now open) scum-thread discussions and try to ferret out working strategies. For instance I'd take a long hard look at storyteller's moves (and who was the other scum that managed to survive to the end of Mafia2?) They seemed to have managed to disguise themselves pretty well, to the point that they were considered "confirmed town".

For what it's worth I would dearly love to have ALL game-related posts in a single thread.
I'm having trouble switching message-board gears to this one, in particular because (a) I can't get notified of new posts in my e-mail, and (b) I can't change the time to match my own (GMT -5) so it's an extra step for me to recognize "new" posts from the home page, and (c) it doesn't mark when there are new posts so I have to remember the last time I checked the page, translate it into the board's time, and work from there.
Also the lines between what game-related posts are relevant to thread A as opposed to thread B are very, very blurry. I just posted a big strategy-related post in the Day 1 thread; I didn't want to split off the answer to Gadarene's worthy question to put it here, so I put it there. But now folks reading this thread may not have realized I answered it, and if I had put it in here, the folks reading the other thread would have to take an extra step to find it. Having strategy posts in different threads will cause things to get lost quickly.
I would like to have one game-related thread, per day, and assorted other "background" threads (e.g. notifying of unavailability; working out the technology; etc).
...... And I've probably posted this in the wrong place as well. Ah well. Working out the kinks.

I'm in favor of a single thread per day myself. It seems too hard to try and cross-connect all the information, plus I feel it's a bit more in the spirit of the 'discussion' type game to have a flowing conversation. Here's a link to my answer: Does linking work this way?I may edit this post to fix the link, but I will never edit in the discussion thread; I assume it's verboten.

I think I'd play like I was playing now and probably how I was/am playing in M3.
In short, I think I'd play the same way if I were scum/mafia/pirate/werewolf or townie/citizen/honest member of the ship

I don't know. Maybe.
What was your name on the SDMB again?
I like to think not much would change, but I don't know.

Me? MHaye. I only signed up originally to flag up an irregularity in M2, and here I am. Mafia games are addictive... Maybe not much would change, but because your aims are different it would show at some time - there will be corner cases where you react differently as scum than you would as vanilla town. The trick is to spot them and realise their significance.

You're telling me? hahaha, I'm a very experienced player as well, athough I've actually hosted/modded more games than I've played in.
But in a way, I think being host gives you even more help and experience on what to look for and signs to notice. Because in every game, you get to see both sides and how they act in the thread. I've hosted about eleven or twelve games in the last year, and I see the same patterns usually. So I incorperate this in any way I can that helps.
Now if I were a pirate myself, well, then again, I doubt my ways would change much because, as host, I know patterns of what scum do and would try to avoid them. Maybe this would show a change. Maybe it wouldn't. I honestly have no idea.

Maybe.
I've only hosted twice, both games in 2004. I remember being interested to see how the strategy of each side developed - and disciplining myself to not accidentally confirm a speculated role. Buut, as I said, I haven't played in nearly a year so my skills are rusty.
Anyone got some WD40?
