Day Two
Jul 31, 2008 11:46:08 GMT -5
Post by NAF1138 on Jul 31, 2008 11:46:08 GMT -5
Good Morning, Vietnam Town Name!
The sun rises with great fanfare, complete with soundtrack written by John Williams.
A few of the smarter players expect the floor to fall out from under them this time and are prepared for the drop. A few are still asleep when this happens, and the results are hilarious and comical--at least for everyone else.
Hoopy Frood was returned to the town, a little roughed up, but generally unharmed. But Mr. Scummyboots esq. has now been arrested on suspicion of being the SK. No game thread for the Scumster, can't use any powers he may have, no talking on any off-board sites he may or may not have access to either. You may hear some fluffy hollering from his room tonight. I am sure everyone will be very happy about this.
CIAS has undergone an apotheosis. He wasn't killed, but he has moved on to the next life. That's kinda cool when you think about it, he was a good guy. When you search his house you find a square and compass pin as well as a well read copy of the King James Bible. He also has a framed good citizenship award from the town hanging on his wall. God love him, Cat was a good guy I guess. Shame he can never live past Day 2 in these games.
As the town gathers their wits about them they notice that the bag of marbles has been smashed to dust in the fall, guess no one will be playing marbles toDay.
It is now Day Two. With 31.4 players alive, it takes 3 to start The Countdown. The Day will end no later than August 7, 2008.
Have fun toDay. And remember, once that clock starts it cannot be stopped. Did I ever tell you how long the countdown lasts? Hmm, I can't remember. No need to give you superfluous information I guess, besides its not like you got that far last time. You probably won't need to figure that out this time either.
Death by Irony is still a lazy mod who would rather play video games than hang out in the Day threads, so bug somebody else with your PMs.
Oh, and the mods would like to give a shout out to our hommie Santo Rugger. Congrats on surviving the Night. Just more proof that you are a good and innocent townie I suppose.
Have fun!

Ah, nice to finally be able to contribute. Not that I have much after being removed from the game for a whole cycle, but at least I can contribute in discussion toDay.
Anyway, given that we have someone regularly arresting people on suspicion of being a serial killer I think it's safe to assume that we have at least one serial killer out there and a role who hunts serial killers down. Should the role find one, there's probably some reward, but only they know what it is. (Well, them and likely any Serial Killers they catch.) The one thing I did find out from my PM is the role-name. I assume Mr. Scummyboots, Esq. is also informed of the name. I will withhold revealing the actual role-name at this point, because I doubt it buys us anything at this point, and may endanger the role. If there's a compelling reason for revealing the role-name, I'm willing to, but at this point, I'll just reveal that the role has an actual name. (Now by "name", I'm not referring to the character name as in Santo's claimed character name is "dotchan" whereas his role-name claim is "obviously innocent townie".)
Now the mods have said they won't lie to us and we are playing a definite mafia game. There's gastardary here, but I don't think we actually are given any true red herrings. Everything serves a purpose, whether we know what it is or not. There's no reason to have a serial killer fining role without serial killers, so I'm going off the assumption that we have at least one SK amognst us. I also am not going to speculate on the alignment of this role, because regardless of alignment, the role is beneficial to town in the end result. I don't know if I had such a role if I'd be quite so gung-ho about using it, since blockers of any type can be just as much of a liability to town as a boon, but the payoff is pretty good. The only real danger, aside from the potential to block useful roles, I can actually see this role being to town is if its win condition is such that if there is only one serial killer and this character wins if he finds the serial killer before he or the SK are dead.
But since SK's are a threat to every party but themselves, the enemy of my enemy is at least temporarily my friend, so I'm content to let this role do its thing for now.
Now, speaking of killings....
We had only 1 last night. Given that there's likely at least one serial killer, and given that the mods say that in spite of the wacky setup, we're still playing mafia, and given that there's 29 of us to start, I think we can assume at least 3 max kills in a night from the combo of vigilante, serial killer, and scum. At this point, its not surprising that a vigilante would hold back. But that still means at least one kill unnacounted for. There's no typical reason for either scum or SK's to not kill, so something or things happened to stop one or more of the kills last night. (And, yes, I know CIAS wasn't technically "killed" but he's out of the game it appears, so it's the same thing.)

I hate that disgusting brown liquid as well.
But I've got a lovely red apple here. It looks so good, I might just take a bite. Unless someone else really wants it. Anyone want this lovely apple[/color]?
No kills per se, but we have lost 2/3 of those alive. Interesting.
I used to think that the day would never come...

Yeah, I wonder if CIAS's death has something to do with the marbles. It's hard to say, since it would all just be speculation anyway.
I *am* quite curious whether there will be any new post restrictions today, as well as why no one was killed, as opposed to apotheosised. It's kinda funny that someone out there is arresting people on suspicion of being an SK, but as far as I can tell, there haven't *been* any SK kills.
Also, we're gonna want to be right careful on the voting, I would say. I wonder if Scummyboots' removal or CIAS's removal is responsible for a majority of the difference between yesterDay's 96 players, and toDay's 31.4 players, or if the cause is something else entirely, such as the gastard mods' whims. Freakin' gastards.
Phew, that ends Buff's brain dump. The real buff tabby is looking on approvingly.

Post by Høøpy Frøød on Jul 31, 2008 12:39:50 GMT -5
Now for my thoughts on the marbles:
This is pretty much what I sent off to NAF...err Generalissimo Bitch Tits yesterday as I was sending him my thoughts on the game for the perusal of the spoiled:
Marbles. Ever since the PM's about the marbles have been coming out, the following little fictional ditty has been going through my head:
Hot Potato, Don't pick it up, pick it up, pick it up. Quick, pass it on, pass it on, pass it on. You don't want to get caught, get caught, get caught. Drop it on someone. Who? Who? Anybody. You better not have it when the big one comes. ...I said you better not have it when the big one comes. It's a Hot Potato.
For those that don't recognize the reference, it's from Douglas Adams' second Dirk Gently book The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul.
My theory is the bag of marbles is the method by which the players can prod the people who don't post much to get out and post. After all, one can't refuse the gift when offered. To not be left "holding the bag" so to speak, you have to pass it off to someone else. If you don't post at least to pass the bag off, you're screwed. If I'm right, they are completely missing the point and are going to be in for a big surprise at the end of the Day. After all, the only people they are trading it between are the more active posters.
Well, I might have been wrong about the end of Day thing, since FGOD, who was the last in posession of it was clearly alive at the end of the Day. It's possible that it would only fire off at the next morning, and since FGOD was arrested at the beginning of the morning, his arrest nullified the effects of the marbles. So they were ineffective at what they were meant to do. The other possibility is that to explode, you had to be below a certain threshhold of posts at the end of the Day, and FGOD was clearly one of the more active posters, so he wasn't in danger. However, he may have been able to bring them back toDay, in which case they would still have been in play, and the hot potato effect would be an issue later.
I guess its a bit moot now as far as the marbles are concerened since they were destroyed in the fall. But for those of you with various toys and such, this might be something to keep in mind. You could be walking around with a time bomb.
(And it's nice to be able to not have to type that scummyboots crud. I mean, sure, I'll no doubt catch flack about it toNight in the fluff thread, but at least I won't hear about it in the game thread.)

So here's what I gathered from last Night's lynch:
1. If we don't make it to the majority outlined at the beginning of the Day, the Executioner won't come out and do his job.
2. If the Executioner doesn't do his job, we still lynch somebody but we don't get official role-type stuff from them, we only get the three items similar to what Rajaat gets from his investigations.
3. Perhaps if the Executioner DOES do his job, we'll probably get official role-type stuff.*
4. From the three items left after peeker's death, it looks like he was probably a doctor of some sort, although getting "doctor" from whatever the hell he was going on about yesterDay is a mystery to me.
*CatinaSuit's not-exactly-death this morning sort of contradicts that idea, considering we only got the three-item information from his disappearance. Maybe it works sort of like Conspiracy where there's a time delay on information reveal. We get the items first and the actual role information later. Or possibly never, this is gastardness.
I think that the number of players and votes needed to lynch will seem arbitrary although the progress is most likely planned out by the gastards upstairs. The total number of players doesn't seem to correspond to anything but I think we need a few Days' more information to see if there's a pattern. While yesterDay's numbers don't seem to mean anything, toDay's numbers made me think of Pi and the "third vote is a scumtell" trope. Is trope the right word to use? Whatever, you know what I mean.
I'm interested to see what's going on with the creepy doll and if anybody else got lolcatted. Also, seems like we've got an apple in our midst now. Huh.

I thank the mods for their responses.
El Conquistador, your answer does help.
Ordinal numbers are used when describing position in a list. When describing a race you talk about the winner, the second- and third- placed competitor, and so on. These are not numbers of quantity - how many of something you have.
You said that it was not allowed to refer to quantities with Arabic numerals; thus I was surprised by your judgement. I wished to know whether you were applying the distinction between cardinal and ordinal numbers.
You are not.
Thank you for that information.
