ATTENDEES:
MEETING BEGINS – 0800
COL. FURY: <Censored>
LIGHT: I’m sorry, sir, I don’t know how to spell that.
FURY: <Censored>
DUGAN: He don’t mean that, Senator. He likes puppies.
BRAND: All right. All right – it’s – All right. Good morning, Senator Breaker, colleagues, Mr. Drake. As most of you know - well. On the 24th of August, that’s, ah, our offices received a report from location 0008 –
BREAKER: That’s California, yes? Los Angeles?
BRAND: Yes, Senator. Field agents in the Los Angeles area reported the disappearance of three major persons of interest – specifically, ah, mutants. Shortly thereafter, we received similar reports from eight additional locations. Including a lengthy report from, ah, New York State. Ah, Westchester County.
DRAKE: You’re welcome.
BRAND: Yes. It took us some time to follow-up on these reports. But we’re, ah, we’re pretty confident we’ve identified all of the missing individuals. I have the list here. Sgt. Major Light will distribute copies. Please remember that this information is strictly confidential; distribution would be considered a termination offense.
DRAKE: Fortunately, I don’t work for S.H.I.E.L.D., so I’ll be appearing on Access Hollywood at –
WRAITH: Agent Brand doesn’t mean termination as in “fired,” Mr. Drake.
BRAND: As you can all see, the list includes a total of 25 persons. To date, we have not found any quality shared by all of the vanished. Most but not all are mutants. Their mutations range very widely in significance. Three are considered, ah, classification Omega.
BREAKER: Classification Omega?
BRAND: Lt. Colonel Dugan? You could, possibly, speak to this, yes?
DUGAN: Yeah. We use Greek letters to classify mutants according to level of danger, so Alpha, Beta, you know. An Omega mutant is one that could, potentially, end all life on Earth. So we try to keep track of those when we can.
BRAND: Right, as I said. Three of the missing are classification Omega. Others have mutations weak enough that S.W.O.R.D. hasn’t even been engaging in active surveillance. Ah, what else? On this list are some of the most famous men and women on the planet, and some people who’s own mothers might not recognize them in the supermarket. Some of them work in groups; some of them work alone. Some of them have worked with us in the past; some of them have worked against us. A few of them are sworn enemies of one another. Many of them have, ah, actively sought, ah, conquest, or what have you. Destruction. It’s, they’re just, unconnected. We think they were targeted literally at random.
BREAKER: Targeted for what?
DUGAN: Hard to say.
DRAKE: I will now toot my own horn. Toot.
FURY: <Censored>
DRAKE: Is that even possible, anatomically speaking?
BRAND: Ah, yes, all right, this is where Mr. Drake comes in. Ah, for those of you who don’t know this already, ah, Mr. Drake is, ah, himself a mutant.
WRAITH: Really. Not one of ours?
BRAND: No, Colonel, no, ah, Mr. Drake I guess operates under the, ah, the professional name of Iceman. He, ah, it’s cold-related. Mr. Iceman, ah, Drake, he currently resides at location 0125 –
BREAKER: The Westchester County location, right?
BRAND: Yes.
BREAKER: I’ll remember them all eventually!
BRAND: Mr. Drake resides at the Xavier Institute, where for the last, ah, some years he has worked as a member of the “X-men.” Several of the individuals who have, ah, gone missing were close colleagues of Mr. Drake, some resided, ah, there, in the building, the Institute. Due to his proximity to the vanished, Mr. Drake was able to investigate the disappearances more quickly than we were able, before any indicators had a chance to be removed or disturbed. He, ah, well, Mr. Drake?
DRAKE: Sure. Everybody’s been kidnapped by aliens! Well, not really, but sort of.
FURY: <Censored>
DRAKE: Of course, Colonel. Sir, Your Honor, Sir. I checked out the rooms of the folks who disappeared from the Institute. Each one got a briefcase. No idea how the briefcases arrived or got past Institute security, but they did. There was, I guess, a symbol? A symbol on the briefcases, all the ones that ended up at the Institute. It was ah, imagine a circle, with the Greek letter Alpha – inside it. Surrounding that, a second circle, and this circle is divided into quadrants, and in each quadrant, there's a picture.
LYNCH: A symbol, actually, four in total.
DRAKE: Thanks for that. Math is hard.
LYNCH: Egyptian origin, probably used popularly approximately 3000 years BC. Top left, two swords crossed: the symbol for strife, armed conflict, war. Top right, a skeleton holding an arrow: a promise of disease, decay. Down from there, a slash like a shepherd’s crook, the Egyptian number seven, topping six waving lines – reference to the seven years’ famine that struck Egypt. And, bottom left, the ram, associated with the god Osiris. God of the Dead.
BRAND: And the Greek Alpha in the middle – Alpha, the beginning, the... ah, the first.
FURY: <Censored> any doubt on who, and what, we’re dealing with here?
