Well, seeing as how I don't know anything about these characters and stories except for what is posted in the game threads, I have nothing useful to add.

Also, story likes to mix up bad guys and good guys anyway. This provides a nice canonical mechanic to do so.
So yeah, names won't count for much.

I've decided to claim. I am Iceman! (You knew someone was going to do it. I'm actually surprised no one has yet. And for those who don't get it, well, you haven't been paying attention to the whole forum now, have you?) I guess I haven't been paying attention to the whole forum. What are you referring to? Ah, I see now you were reading the Observation Deck forum. For shame, doing it before the Mod officially made it in-limits.

Oh, I have an idea. Would everyone state their level of familiarity with this comic world? Might be nice to see who knows how much.
I'll start: I've never read Marvel comics, but I've watched a few cartoons and movies.

Sorry, for multi-posting, but when I got ideas, I got to post them. I don't think this is a good idea, but I'll toss it out anyway. At least we can get some knife-fightsdiscussion out of it.
How about we all reveal our "REAL NAME" from our role PM? (See example Iceman role PM for exactly what I mean.) We'd need to find a random order, or course.
Points: 1. It'd give the Town a better idea of what we have to work with, in terms of powers (maybe). But, it wouldn't give us alignment information. (mildy pro-Town) 2. It'd give the Scum a better idea of who to target, assuming they know who the other Scum are. (definitely anti-Town) 3. If we do this early, it will restrict what Scum can claim later. Trapping Scum in their own lies is one of the best methods of catching them. (definitely pro-Town) 4. Organizing a random order and strong-arming everyone into revealing will use up a ton of time. But Day One conversation is usually marginally productive at best, anyway. (mildy anti-Town)
Any comments? My first assessment is that the negatives outweigh the positives, but I could be convinced otherwise.

First question:
I'm relatively familiar with the Marvel universe. I read a lot of comics back in the day, and watched a lot of movies, and generally enjoy it. I am likely to know something about most of the characters involved.
Second question:
I don't know if I'd want to mass-reveal names--I don't think that knowing the potential powers is worth it. Additionally to that, knowing story, not everyone is going to have powers congruent with their comic abilities, or at the least not access to their main powers. The other thing is that story's smart enough to have balanced the game so that a night0/day1 mass reveal will not make it unbalanced.
At this point, I'm planning on using Night 0 for discussing approaches, and Day 1 for starting to sniff out alignments based on the the Night 0 discussion.

A) I'm in the same boat, Pleonast, what with the cartoons and the movies but no so much with the actual comics. My bf, however, is quite familiar with the Marvel universe, and is pretty interested in this game, making this the first time I've actually convinced someone IRL to listen to me talk about Mafia for more than 5 seconds.
B) I'm not opposed to a mass role name claim, but I'm not sure how much good it would do, especially since alignments don't necessarily match what we might think. Also, I have a feeling that our abilities have been pulled from several different continuities. So if somebody (forex) claims Iceman, and we know he's "traditionally" good, if there's also a continuity where he's been subjugated by Mister Sinister, the role could easily be pulled from that. I do agree that it could help root out inconsistencies further down the line, and that could really help us.

Oh, and Hi Zeriel, I think you're the only one in this game I've not played with before, but I've seen you around on the Dope. So, howdy!

My post not edited to add that I don't think a mass name reveal hurts us all that much, and therefore will participate if the majority agrees.

Hi, bufftabby. I used to play but work ate my soul, but now I'm back!
Ask NAF about me. =P
Final thoughts on the mass nameclaim: if/when I end up claiming my name, I'm going to try to play it "in character" from then on out. I may do that anyway starting on Day One.
Because I'm a dork.

The other thing is that story's smart enough to have balanced the game so that a night0/day1 mass reveal will not make it unbalanced. I wouldn't have suggested it if I thought it would break the game. The uncertainty of powers and alignment mitigates both the benefits and the costs of revealing names. At least in terms of the initial effects. But it doesn't reduce the benefit of the Town to my point 3. For example, a player who to be Iceman would be suspect if he then later claimed something out of character (I don't know, a Night kill power?). So, if we decide that the names aren't immediately useful, then that's a strong argument to revealing them early, to prevent scum from claiming powers at their own convenience later. If, however, we decide that the names may be a good indication of powers (even if not alignment), that would be a good argument against not revealing. I'm tending towards the good indication and should not reveal.

I don't think a mass name claim would be all that useful. I doubt the names would match up to what the expected alignment would be, and I wouldn't even put it past storyteller to have given some roles powers different than would be expected. All in all I don't think we'd gain enough useful information to make it worth it.

And I am such a dork. How do you go about adding an avatar to your profile? Go to your profile (see link in menu near top of the page. On the profile page, click Modify Profile. You have a choice of pre-designed avatars, or you can put in a link to one of your own design (which you'll need to host on an image server like photobucket).

I'm in a similar situation. I've got a little bit of knowledge, but my girlfriend was a hug Marvel fan back in the day. I'm trying to convince her to join the boards and observe this game unspoilered. (She's actually shown interest in playing mafia, but doesn't feel she's got enough time with law school. She doesn't want to be spoiled in any game I play in that she's not in because she wouldn't want to accidentally slip any knowledge she knows of.)

I gotta say the mass role claims would probably only be rather useful to the scum. The issue is them having more information than we do, since they know all of their (myriad?) names and powers, they'd have a secure baseline to check against, something the town lacks.
Also no more spartuci?
I'm sad.

As far as name claims go, I am ok with them I guess if it will stop the conversation about them. We should have learned by now that name claims aren't going to get us anywhere unless the mods are stupid. The mods aren't stupid. That being said I don't see how a name claim can hurt us either. Again, unless the mods are stupid (which they are not).

*nods* Pleo's point three is the only reason I'm willing to go along with it--it nails people down to a baseline we can then compare against if they slip later.

The thing is, she knows that if she's spoiled she really won't be able to discuss the game at all with me. If she's just watching and is only spoiled with who I am, it won't be a problem. It'll be interesting if we ever play in a game together. There probably won't be any discussion about the game happening between us at all.

I am of the opinion that name claims will only help scum and am therefore completely opposed to the idea. Can someone, Pleo maybe, give me a concrete example of how name claims will help town? You state that name claims will restrict what Scum claim later. How? Maybe I'm stupid but I'm just not getting it.

My guess is that Story and Kat will have given out cover roles to the scum like were given to the scum in Batman, to prevent the breaking of the game with a name claim. Like I said, I am not opposed, I think it will be a neutral gain and if going ahead and doing it will shut down a Day long debate about should we/shouldn't we then I am all for it. I am just saying, don't get your hopes up.
