We have a place for minor grumbles, but that just throws the need for a place for people to share little bits of good news into sharp relief.
So here's a thread to share the good news. (It's rarely as active as the grumps thread, but that's the nature of things, right?)
Mine?
I have an invite to an Assessment Morning on Thursday, the result of a job application. Not the greatest job in the world, and not well paid; but better than nothing, and it's local so travel won't be too painful (and will be against the flow).

I was banned from the other thread for being to cheerful - so I though it would be safe to come in here and fool around

I've been selected for a little side position in my company. It doesn't carry anything special with it other than another feather in my cap here, but in order to get training the company's going to have to fly to California to another division to get it.
The training's in August, so it's not as great as it would be if say I was flying to California in the dead of winter, but still, free trip to CA and a nice side-task to supplement what I currently do. I'm good with that.

Right now I'm enjoying 12 oz of Goose Island Brewery's Bourbon County Stout.
It's a 13% ABV brew that after primary fermentation spends 100 Days of secondary fermentation in Bourbon Barrels. After which it is bottled and the yeast is still active. (Some call it tertiary fermentation, but it's really just a continuation of the secondary fermenation process.) Due to the high alcohol and hop content, along with the active yeast, this beer can be aged for up to a few years in the bottle, where it will become more complex (and even higher alcohol).
The current bottle I'm drinking was from a pack brewed in 2008 that I bought about 3 months ago or so. Granted, the pack has been in my fridge, so it hasn't aged beyond the time I bought it.
I do have one bottle, however, that I'm keeping around for aging purposes. I'll probably crack it open sometime in 2010.

Should have posted this here instead of in the game thread, but I was sooooo excited I posted it there. W00t! I got a call from my lovely, beautiful, incredibly smart girl-child. She passed her board certifications and is now a licensed Dr. of Clinical Psychology. Unfortunately, I have bad news for you kiddies out there with your little kidlets that you worry about all the time. Just wait; you'll be frantic when they take the car out for the first time. And you'll be miserable then frantic when your kid goes out with an asshole* for years who dumps her when they're in Paris, at Christmas for God's sake, then stalks her when they get back. And.....well bottom line, it never ends. You think to yourself, I won't worry anymore when they graduate HS, ok college, ok grad school, ok when the baby's born. Hahahahahaha. It never ends. It's a life long commitment. But days like this are *We knew he was an asshole from the start but ya can't say anything or they cling to them more. Gah, 4 years of not saying anything almost killed me.

Awesome news. I am almost afraid to ask if she's going to hit you up for a loan to finance her post-doc work, but I have no idea whether or not such things are paid for by think tanks or the Illuminati or in exchange for teaching classes, etc.

We cut the kiddies loose when we made sure they got their bs degrees with no loans. Our daughter's husband basically supported them while she was in grad school and now she will return the favor for him. He takes his quals on Wed. in microbiology, fingers crossed.....it never ends I tell ya.

Where do I call to make an appointment? I really hope you never have to make an appointment with her. She does forensic psych. But, if you ever commit a heinous crime and find yourself in need of a psychologist to testify in court that you aren't able to stand trial because you're essentially batshit crazy I'll give you her number.

*prods the thread.*
With the doom and gloom going on, we need something to cheer us up.
Le Chatelier's Principle works!
As the nation's jobless expands, the department responsible for running the unemployment benefit programme recruit staff - to work in jobcentres. Thus (hopefully anyway) reducing the number of jobless.
The point of this is that I have an assessment on October 26th. If I pass, the interview follows later in the day.
(And I remembered 'A' level Chemistry that I took just under 35 years ago. Go me!)

A follow up.
Last Thursday I did something that I have never ever done before in my whole life.
I bought a new suit.
My old one had developed small holes in the right arm and left shoulder; not very noticeable, but just my luck to have an interviewer pick up on me. But hey, that suit's old enough to vote, go drinking in public or enlist in the army in its own right now. So I bought a new one.

Finally quit biting my nails, three weeks "sober" and counting. *knocks on wood* woot woot, congrats. a week away from 5 months. i'm still trying to get used to waking up all refreshed and not feeling like crap. the other thing that will kick in if it hasn't already, is going to the atm machine at lunch and then waking up the next morning with some cash still in the wallet. the only thing i can figure is that i was throwing the shit away in some sort of stupor.

I've found work. More than I need actually, but since both positions are as an independent contractor (at least at first) and we need the cash flow, I'll be putting in 55 hour weeks and keeping both of my bridges unburned and my future options open. Thankfully the world of online fraud is vast enough to have me working in two different areas with no conflict of interest.

Congratulations cookies, and if you need more work, just send me your bank details, SSN and address and I can post some really useful job leads to your bank account.
Our worldly household goods have finally completed a 2 1/2 month epic sea voyage and it all gets delivered tomorrow, yeah for not having to living out of a suit case any more.

Well, after a few months of not very much, I have been offered not one but two interviews.
One is for a nonpaying position volunteering with a Citizens Advice Bureau. It's not what I want but it will help if I get it, as I can then put it on my CV.
The other is for an import firm. (And no, it's not called Universal Export.)

Make that three interviews. Since I haven't heard from the export firm, I assume I didn't get that post - they were quite keen to get someone in, and said they'd contact me within a week if I was successful. Not a peep, so no luck there. The third interview was with one of the best known Christian charitable organisations in the world - the Salvation Army. That went moderately well, I hope. I should hear next week if I'm going to get the position. (At least I had the sense to look up the founder's name. I remembered it was Booth, but the only forenames I could think of were those of the other Booth who did a famous - or infamous - deed in 1865...) As for the voluntary position - I have been offered it, and took it up subject to my finding a paid job, and being able to live in the interim. I start on Tuesday, doing two days a week. New experience will do wonders for my long-term job prospects.
