I will probably start official recruiting for this Tuesday on the Dope. NAF will comoderate with me. This is the opening post (I'm letting you guys get a sneak peak.)
Q. What is this thread about?
A. It's where Hoopy Frood and NAF's Gasterd...er...Gastard Mafia game will be held.
Q. Who are Hoopy Frood and NAF?
A. The Inglorious Gasterds who will be moderating this game. And fine upstanding Gentlemen as well.
Q. Mafia? What's that?
A. It's a game that started as a party game almost but not quite entirely unlike charades. For one thing there's death involved. Also, pantomime is completely optional, and rather hard to pull off on a message board. Honestly, if you don't know what Mafia is, you probably don't want to make this game you're first experience.
Q. Okay, I know what Mafia is, and I'm familiar with the overall strategies, but I've never played Mafia online before. Should I play in this one?
A. Depends. There's nothing overly complex in this game, but it's Gasterd, so do you feel lucky? Well do you, Punk!?
Q. Hey, I'm the one asking the questions, not you! Got that?
A. Sorry.
Q. Gasterd Mafia? What's that?
A. Gasterd is a corruption of Gastard.
Q. Okay, but that's not really what I meant. Let me reiterate: Gastard Mafia? What's that?
A. Gastard Mafia is an inside joke originating from Arkham Nights Batman Mafia game on Idlemafia.com. It's the same thing as Bastard Mafia.
Q. That's not what I meant either. I mean, it is what I meant, but...just let me try this one more time: Bastard Mafia? What's that?
A. Bastard Mafia is a mafia game that violates, in one or more ways, the typical understood paradigms Mafia is supposed to operate within. Sometimes the bastardness arises in a game that is unbalanced, sometimes it arises in the mod lying to you, sometimes it arises in the way the roles interplay with each other, etc. However, one thing about bastard games is that the gimmicks are still consistent. It's not carte blanche for the mod to do whatever he wants. There is a framework the mod adheres to, and the bastard setup should be explainable and discoverable. Otherwise, the mod's just being an asshole. That being said, part of the game in bastard mafia is figuring out what makes it bastard.
Q. So what makes this game Bastard?
A. Can't you read? I said part of the game is to figure that out.
Q. All right, let me try a different angle: What in this game isn't bastard?
A. Well, I can't really tell you that either. But I will let you know these 3 points:
1) Everything posted in this introductory post is "Gasterds' Honest Truth". There are no lies in here. There may or may not be lies anywhere after this post, but there aren't any here.
2) Should it be required that the Gasterds inform you of something that needs to be confirmed as "Gasterds' Honest Truth" we will enclose the statement in the fake tags [Gasterds' Honest Truth][/Gasterds' Honest Truth]
3) There will be no (intentional) voting anomalies. All vote counts are implicitly Gasterds' Honest Truth. This doesn't mean we won't make a mistake, but if we do, feel free to bring it to our attention. There will be no vote manipulators of any shape in this game.
Q. So does this game have anything to do with Hitler?
A. No! Godwin be damned!
Q. You know, by bringing up Hitler at all in this FAQ, you have invoked Godwin's Law anyway.
A. That wasn't a question, smartass!
Q. So does this have anything at all to do with Tarantino's new movie?
A. No. We just thought that name was amusing. We actually have an alternate title for the game.
Q. And that title would be...?
A. You'll find out, eventually.
Q. So what can you tell us about the setup?
A. The setup is semi-open. The role descriptions will be publicly available and in fact, here they are. Every player in this game will have one of the following roles:
Q. Any other rules I should be aware of?
A. Yes.
00. The Gasterds reserve the right to edit these rules at any time should something truly unexpected occur.
01. ALL KILL SUBMISSIONS ARE MANDATORY. This includes Scum nightkill, Vigilante kills, Serial Killer kills, and the lynch. There is no "No Lynch". A vote for that is completely ignored. If no one votes, random.org will decide who dies. If anyone with a mandatory night kill does not submit it in time, random.org will decide who they target. And you cannot intentionally kill yourself. If you try, once again, random.org will decide the target instead. Now, to make it easier for people who might have to miss a Dusk/Night, you are welcome to early submit two targets in preferential order. We will count your second target should your first target get lynched.
02. All votes must be in blue. All unvotes must be in red. Bold is preferred because it's more apt to be seen. Voting should be done as "Vote: Name". If you are currently voting someone, you must unvote them before you can vote someone else. A name is not required when unvoting, but it reduces the chance of mod error.
03. The person with the most votes at the end of the day will be lynched. If there is a tie, whoever got there first on an increasing vote count or last on a decreasing vote count dies.
04. When you're dead, shut up. We will send you the spoilers. Don't post, even to say goodbye. Enjoy watching the rest of the game as your character's body rots in the grave.
05. There will be no communication outside the game thread for anyone who isn't scum. And scum can only communicate outside of the game with each other on the board set up for that purpose.
06. All Days will last 3 real time days. All Nights (save Night 0) will last 1 real-time day. There will be no Gasterdness in the cycles. Each Day/Night will end 3 P.M. CDT (i.e. GMT -5, do the math for your own time zone).
07. Quoting or faking any PMs you receive from the Gasterds will get you modkilled and you will instantly lose the game, regardless of who ultimately wins (even if it's your side). You may paraphrase anything in the pm. If you are worried you are quoting more so then paraphrasing you should probably PM the Gasterds before we modkill you. And since all role PMs are publicly available and will not be altered by us, don't try to claim otherwise.
08. No small or invisible text. Editing is not allowed either. Don't do it. We don't want to have to modkill you, so don't force our hand by doing this.
09. If you have a rule question feel free to post it in green. Chances are we'll ignore you. If we don't respond, feel free to try again because there's a very slight chance we may have just missed it. If don't respond after the second time, give up, because we are actually ignoring it. You can also PM questions. Only PM them once. We'll likely respond and tell you to bugger off, but we are less apt to ignore you than if you post on board.
10. There will be no mod-enforced participation. If you don't participate, you'll probably get lynched.
11. Once again, we reiterate that this is a Bastard Game. Consider this your final warning
12. This is a game. Have fun and respect the other players. Don't be a jerk.
13. If it seems like it should be illegal, it probably is. Considering the fact rules sometimes can't cover everything. Please use your common sense. When all else fails blame the mod and trust yourself.
Q: So when does this start?
A: Night 0 will start when we get 15 players signed up. Or if we realize that we won't get 15 players, we'll do a quick adjustment to the game and send out PMs to those who are signed up. But the game works best with 15. Day 1 will begin at 3 PM some point after all players have confirmed in thread.

Q. So what can you tell us about the setup?
A. The setup is semi-open. The role descriptions will be publicly available and in fact, here they are. Every player in this game will have one of the following roles:
You are a Vanilla Townie. But, hey, vanilla is a flavor, right? You're not called "Plain Townie" after all! Yeah, you're important! You can vote to lynch all interloping scum you have come to take over your town. Go you! Of course, so can everyone else, and they have additional powers to boot. So in the grand scheme of things you're a wimp. Suck it up! You win when all threats to the town's safety have been removed from the game.
You are a Mafia Goon, your partners are _____, who are also Mafia Goons. All of you failed out of Mafia power-role school which is why you're all just goons. You have to envy the Godfather's from afar and deep down inside you know they make fun of your failures. Suck it up! Each night you may discuss the game at [insert location and password here]. Before Night's end, you must send me via PM on the Straight Dope the name of a player who you want to eliminate from the game, and the Scum player who will be performing the kill. You win when all other players are eliminated or nothing can be done to prevent this from happening.
You are a Cop. Everyone in town likes you because you can confirm them as town so they won't get lynched, and you can out the scum so they'll get lynched instead of a townie. At least that's what they tell you to your face. In reality, they think you're a self-important and aggrandizing prick who thinks he runs the damn place. Suck it up! Each night you may send me the name of a player. I will tell you whether that player is Mafia or Town. And there aren't even any Godfathers or Millers to screw you up. Lucky you! You win when all threats to the town's safety have been removed from the game.
You are a Doc. Everyone in town likes you because you can protect them from dying. At least that's what they tell you to your face. In reality, they think you're a quack because you miss your protections most of the time. It's a good thing you have a good lawyer because if you didn't either the AMA (suck it non-Americans) would have revoked your license by now or the malpractice suits would have driven you into bankruptcy. Suck it up! Each night you may send me the name of a player. If that player is targeted for killing during the night, they will survive instead. You win when all threats to the town's safety have been removed from the game.
You are a Roleblocker. Everyone hates you because you thwart them. Town...Scum...doesn't matter. Town probably hates you more, though, since you're supposed to be on their side, but usually you end up blocking the Doc or the Cop while completely missing the Scum. Heck, maybe town should lynch you out of principle just so you don't hurt their case. But suck it up! At least you can't hurt the vanilla. Each night you may send me the name of a player. If that player would be taking an action that night, their action will fail. You win when all threats to the town's safety have been removed from the game.
You are a Vigilante, the coolest town role there is. Or so you like to think just because you have your own gun. In reality, you're hated even more than the roleblocker. Because at least when the roleblocker fucks up he doesn't directly kill an innocent. Yeah, nice shootin', Tex! Even the vanilla invoke your name in blasphemous terms. Suck it up! Each night you must send me via PM on the Straight Dope the name of a player you want to target. You win when all threats to the town's safety have been eliminated.
You are a Serial Killer, the coolest role there is. Or so you like to think just because you have your own gun. In reality, you're just an insane murderous creep with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Even the vig has a empathy and a conscience. Suck it up! Each night you must send me via PM on the Straight Dope the name of a player you want to target. You win when you are the last player alive or everybody is dead.
