If you would like to host a game, enter the lottery by posting to this thread. You must have your game ready in 6-8 weeks, to start immediately after Space Hijack ends. The lottery will remain open until Thursday, October 29th at 5:00pm Eastern Time. Lottery rules:- I will conduct the drawing using random.org with a pre-determined random seed so that you all know it's not fixed. I propose we use the score of game two of the World Series in the format: "[alteamname][alteamscore][phillies][philliesscore]". For example, "yankees13phillies0" (my prediction, btw). The entrants will be listed in the same order in which they enter.
- You get one chance to win for each time you've submitted your name to a lottery since the last time you hosted. For example, if you have entered two lotteries since the last time you hosted, your current entry will be worth three chances. This way, people who are waiting longer to host have a better chance of winning. People who have more than one chance if they enter this lottery: Hoopy Frood (2), paulwhoisaghost (2), SisterCoyote (2), julie (3), MiteyMouse (3), pedescribe (3), storyteller0910 (3), bufftabby (4). Entrants names will be listed for X lines in a row, where X is the number of chances the entrant has accumulated.
- You cannot enter another lottery after you have hosted until at least three games have passed. This excludes CatInASuit, Pleonast, and Hawkeyeop from entering.
Please feel free to ask me any questions about the drawing, comment, or bitch and moan in this thread. I am planning to enter myself in the lottery. Since I am doing the drawing using a pre-posted public seed, I do not see any conflict of interest. However, if anyone objects I will have an uninterested third party perform the drawing using a public seed they can post now or at a later date. Entrants: Name | Chances | FlyingCowOfDoom | 1 | Pedescribe | 3 | Hoopy Frood (sorry I'm too lazy to do the weird o thingies) | 2 | Idle Thoughts | 1 | storyteller | 3 | Mister Blockey | 1 | peekercpa | 1 | Sister Coyote | 2 | Pollux Oil | 1 |
Lottery Results:Winner: storytellerRunner Up (in case storyteller gets hit by a bus): Idle Thoughts Please feel free to check my results. Storyteller, congratulations! Please have your game ready by the time CatInASuit's game ends. For the rest of you, we will conduct another lottery when storyteller's game begins. --FCOD

Also, I oppose using a known seed, as anyone can look up the result ahead of time. Instead, we should use the seed of something that will be known in the future.
I propose: TotalScoreforYankeesinfirst3gamesofseries - TotalScoreforPhilliesinfirst3gamesofseries

On behalf of Rysto, Hoopy and MHaye I would like to put the Malazan game into the lottery. I probably won't be able to help host it if it wins, but I would still like to see it run.
Note: once again, this is not an entry for me, but for the game I have been helping Hoopy et al design.

Well, since game 2 is Oct 29th, how about we just use "yankees xphillies y" where x is the Yankee's score and y is the Phillies score for game 2. I can close the lottery before the game starts. --FCOD

I know you guys like using sports scores, but random.org supplies listing by Date Seed. Simply choose a date in the future (after signups close) and use that seed as your seed. The seed is not available prior to the date itself. See here: www.random.org/lists/?mode=advancedand check "Use pregenerated randomization from" then use a date that occurs after signups close.

Yeah I know that, having used it for the last two lotteries. However, I thought it'd be more fun to do it this way --FCOD

I would like to enter.
I do not have any opinion on the randomization method, primarily because I am an English major and I understand only one out of every three to four words in the explanation. I'm pretty sure you're not going to cheat anybody.

LOL. Basically, the random generator takes a list of names and a "seed." The seed is used in a complicated calculation to create a seemingly random order. If you use the same seed and same list, the output will be the same every time. Because the seed is public, anyone can verify that I'm not ordering the list how I want it to be. However, I could just keep trying seeds until the outcome was good for me, so we arrange for the seed to be determined after the list is "locked in." By using a pre-selected seed format that is impossible to predict (i.e. sports scores) it is impossible to cheat.

Well, on the bright side, if we don't make it this time, you might be able to help run it if we win the next lottery. (How long are you planning on going on hiatus?) And you're more than welcome to hang out on the spoiler boards. Also, since this will only be a closed setup the first time it's run, any of the mods involved are welcome to play later incarnations, should I run it again.

(How long are you planning on going on hiatus?) I don't know. I have no idea what my life is going to look like once the little one is born, so I am playing it by ear for now. I figure I will be back to work in a little under 2 weeks since my office doesn't offer paternity leave and I am just using up my vacation days to take off. But I probably shouldn't be all that involved in a mafia game for a little bit of time. My head probably won't be in it. I better be!

yaknow i have been rolling one around. it would probably involve opera, classical composers, and some sort of oenophile component.
kind of like scum would be 2005 alchemy syrah and a power role would be a 2002 nicholas bonnes mares. pfk would be anything by lafite. additionally blegin would be good and placido would be godfatherish. of course i'd tweak it a touch.
i mean, seriously who can listen to caro nome che il mio cor and not get chills.

D'oh, sorry. Fingers started typing 'pe' and I lost track of ' em. I wouldn't actually be interested in an oenephile opera mafia run by you, I admit. It'd take Peeker's special brand of crazy sauce to make it fun.
