Because, addict that I am, have been in severe withdrawl ever since the last text-based roleplaying group I was in died an ignoble death when a majority of the people there lost interest, and when I'm in Mafia Mode I'm spending half my time freaking out about 1) getting lynched, 2) getting Nightkilled or 3) Hi Opal! losing the game for my side, which of course means I don't have as much fun as I'd like to.
(Inner Three Year Old)I wanna plaaaaaaaaay!(/ITYO)
I would love to play in some kind of world, either original or based on a preexisting series or in some fashion of mashup, preferably in a setup that encourages involvement and doesn't restrict creativity--but at the same time has some semblance of continuity.
And if you guys don't mind being traumatized for life, I'll even share links of previous efforts--mind you, a lot of this happened in a point in my life when I was socially awkward and not a good writer, so some of it is pretty cringeworthy.

:mind flashes back to BoatMurder: :cringes and laughs maniacally: I highly recommend reading it, one of the best examples of RoundRobin Writing I've ever seen, though it takes some time to get used to it. But any fan of spite based games or fantasy games will enjoy it (I think i discovered it from a post on the Dope Message Boards)

It sounds like it could be fun. How do you play?

It sounds like it could be fun. How do you play? Most of the time, the process goes something like this: 1) Either someone takes charge of the plot as the "GM" or the story is written by committee. 2) Everybody writes up a character, which is put through approval via GM fiat or vote. 3) Writing begins, either as inspiration strikes or by predetermined order.

(unnecessarily bossy hat ON!) Yayz! Okay, so we totally need to decide a number of things: 1) Who is in charge? 2) What kind of rules are in place as far as what we can and can't do with each other's characters, enforcing participation, etc? 3) What world will we be playing in? I have any number of ideas (most of then evil ), but personally I'd like to do some kind of massively mashed-up universe where all of the fictional worlds have crashed into each other or something and they can interact. I'm fine with either playing an existing character or coming up with my own.

While I'm not volunteering to join in
... or be in charge ...
I have in my bookcase an anthology called Thieves World. The idea was that several writers write stories set in a shared city and with characters that could interact. Each writer could make use of other people's characters to further their plot, but couldn't do anything major to another author's character (without permission from the character's owner).
It turned into a reasonably successful 12 book series.
Something along those lines might work.

Kinda like the Wild Card series that George RR Martin edited. Mosaic novels he called them.
And mhaye, you should join in. You are an awesome writer.

So, if no one wants to GM, are we going to draw straws? I'd be fine with a mash-up of fictional 'verses. I was also thinking that a VA hospital would make an interesting place to kick off some character-building.

Well, I don't mind being the evil dictator. ;D
(I just tend to be a little bossy when I have a very strong idea of what to do with the plot...otherwise I'm very low key and I don't even mind the players trying to thwart me. ;D)
Rules that I tend to use: 1) Treat others as you'd like to be treated. 2) Don't direct other people's characters (i.e. have them do or stay stuff) without their permission, as everybody's mileage may vary. 3) Try to keep some semblance of continuity. 4) Don't bring grudges in, and don't take them out. Resolve issues in private when possible. 5) Participate on a semi-regular basis.
And depending on what you guys are comfortable with, I'll leave the rule about using massively overpowered characters off the list. (You know, those people that could theoretically bend reality on a regular basis, or always come out on top by virtue of being the Main Character.)

I am ok with Dot GMing if everyone else is. Lord knows I don't want that position.
So, Dot, how do we get started?

Thanks NAF.
What I don't really have is the necessary inspiration for sustained development. Otherwise I would.
(That and the accuracy necessary to ensure that I don't hit the "\" key instead of the "a" ...)

"Honey, we're doomed. We're stuck in a 'write a story, one line at a time' game!" (This can continue at your leisure, of course, but what I had in mind was a little bit more complicated. See here for details.)

"Shut up and take your gummy Valiums, dear" was the snappy reply from his Wife as she gingerly... DIRTY! What? You telling me that I am the only one imagining sexually explicit things happening between consenting pastries right now?

wow. Yeah. I have a dirty mind normally but i can't think of anything dirty to end that sentence.... It was originally "gingerly poured out some milk for him" (and then in my mind the GingerMan accuses her of trying to kill him, but i figured that was more than 1 sentence). the fact that you got somethinG DIRTY out of it though.... Well. I salute you then sir.
Hmm... wait wait, it's coming to me. But i have to TRY for it to be a dirty thought, its certainly not in the first 10 things I'd think about. But still Balls in anyone's court....
