I was elected team captain of our rugby club today! Unfortunately, our previous captain had prior commitments and isn't going to be able to make the next few games, so instead of having a temporary captain, he decided we should just elect a new one. I found out on Tuesday that he was going to be stepping down, and I kind of had a feeling that I was going to step in to take his place. We held the voting after practice. The other two guys on the ballot are great players; one knows the rules pretty well and is a great defensive player, while the other has pretty good field presence and can put himself into position to be a great offensive player. They're both better than me at what they do, but I'm a much better communicator on the pitch (and I throw some pretty damn good parties, to boot.). My downside is that I'm a bit out of shape right now, but I'll fix that pretty quick now that spring is upon us. I was the captain of my college team, and I've always aspired to be the captain of my men's club side. I really had no idea that it would happen so soon, though. I'm pretty excited, our next game is on Saturday, so I'll be sure and let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks, guys! I'm putting our roster together while watching my explosives class (shaped charges lecture) online. I really enjoy the puzzle, because no matter what I do (within reason), I can make all the pieces fit. I'm so pumped about Tomorrow... err, tomorrow; I haven't been this excited to play in quite a while. BYAHH!!! And start with Roosh for sabotaging my karma. I thought we already had the conversation about me rucking RoOsh till he scrums?

In case you hadn't noticed SR, at 409 posts your post title is "Peanut Accident." I don't know how long it's been like that or when it will change.
I just thought it should be memorialised.

Holy, shit! That was difficult. We were assigned the worst ref in the entire union; a gal that couldn't keep up with the action, much less make the correct calls. Half of my captaincy was devoted to telling my men to shut the fuck up instead of talking to the official, it was that bad. I hesitate posting specifics, because I think only MHaye and CatInA will know what I'm talking about, but let's just say they were really, really bad. *sigh* In two weeks, we take on my alma mater, though, so I'm looking forward to putting a shoulder and/or boot into some college kids.

First off, congrats on being captain. No please, give the specifics, I could do with a good chuckle, because talking back to the officials is always a dumb idea. So which rugby captain do you model yourself on then ;D

You can also assume that when it comes to the laws of rugby I don't know enough to fill a thimble. I can sympathise though - because I have been that ref. Back in my student days, I was asked to ref half a football game between my side and a short-handed opposition because the assigned ref didn't turn up either. (Iirc, the opposition had 11 men, we managed to find a sub) So I spent 45 minutes trying to keep up with a game by myself, without the help of linesmen (because there were not any) and having to stick to one side of the field because the sun was low in the west, and would be right in my eyes if I didn't keep my back to it. So I probably have some sympathy for the ref... But if you spent time trying to keep your side calm, you started off your captaincy doing what the captain should. Hopefully it'll be a good year. So feel free to tell your stories. They'll pass right over my head, but I'll enjoy them anyway

Someone channeling Barry John not knowing the rules of Rugby. Shocking, I tell you. Rugby is my favourite sport for watching and I know the rules pretty well. When I played I was a not very good blindside flanker (Oi! you lot, minds out of the gutter).

My trouble with rugby is my eyes. I had one long-sighted eye and one short-sighted in my teens. That is a recipe for headaches, so I had to wear glasses all the time.
That's quite dangerous in a game of rugby. So I didn't play it (except for three games at school). Consequently I never learned the rules.

The four worst calls I can think of off the top of my head were: Scrum half reaches in to pull the ball out of the ruck: Ref: Whistle. Hands in the ruck. Me: Ma'am, that was our scrumhalf. Ref: I saw who it was. He had his hands in the ruck. Me: Huh? Second situation, our ball carrier and their tackler go to ground with a lone rucker from our team. There's no opposition so there's no ruck. Our ball carrier is holding on to the ball with no defence there to keep it from getting kicked, but he's not playing the ball. Ref: Whistle. Penalty, holding on to the ball. Me: But ma'am, there was no defense there. Ref: I know. But he was holding on to the ball. Me: Huh? Third situation. Their inside center reaches for a pass. It hits his hands, and bounces forward a full 5 meters. He scoops it up and keeps running. I had all but given up on trying to figure out how and what she was calling by then, so I didn't say a word. Fourth situation, line out. Opposition throws in non straight line out. Whistled dead, line out goes to us. We throw in non straight line out, try scored. Other captain: Ma'am, that line out wasn't straight. Ref: I didn't notice. Me:

Oh dear, I'm not going to ask how may offsides or forward passes she missed during the game.
IIRC as for holding on to the ball on the ground, the defense does not have to be there for the ball to have to be released. However, there is nothing to prevent him from returning to his feet and picking the ball up.
About the only thing you can do on the ground is place the ball back for another team member to pick it up.
Here's hoping the next game goes better.

While I'm completely lost, my girlfriend would totally know what you are talking about. She was in club rugby in college. I'm pretty sure she played one of the ones in the scrum who push behind the people who are lifting up the Hooker. (Lock? Is that right?).
She's 5'11". Muscular frame (lean muscle, but she puts it on easily). Tallest woman I ever dated, or for that matter even went out on a date with.

Yep, she was a lock. I could have told you that based on your physical description alone (locks are generally the tallest players, as pushing on the props from a kneel to full extension really benefits from long legs. The name comes from the fact that they literally lock their legs out to provide a platform for the front row.). The ones that lift up the hooker are called props, because they "prop" the hooker up. That's the position I play, tighthead prop, #3. To round out the scrum, the hookers hook the ball, the flankers flank, and the 8-man provides support to the loose forwards (the other flanker).
I've been having some trouble with those fuckers, though, I think I'm going to start a thread on the Dope tomorrow about it. Stay tuned...

That made nearly absolutely no sense to me, but it was totally amazing.
I get the bad ref thing though. I'm a soccer player/ref, and I've been on both sides of it. Somedays, no matter how hard you're working at it, you miss calls you really should get.

And sometimes, no matter what call you make, one set of bleachers is going to be yelling at you at the Little League game! I umped a few games when I was in high school, and it pretty much sucked. But it's one thing to have a ref that blows a few calls, and another to have a ref that completely doesn't know the rules, much less the spirit of the rules.
Oh, and in my post last night, I was talking about my players spouting off at the mouth being fuckers, not about refs.

I'm really surprised that there seems to be such a following for Union in the States.
I'm more of a Rugby League man myself, but I do follow the Super 14 and International Union to some extent. While I still get confused occasionally on some of the more technical points I can follow along fairly easily, and completely understand your complaints about your game Santo.
Oh and as to your OP - congrats.
