Okay, so I figured I'd maybe try to run a simple game like I usually do. Basic set up, open game, standard roles that aren't anything too complex. It was a nice thought, at least, while it lasted. But then I got together with Santo Rugger (who will be co-mod) and things got a litttttttle bit more....advanced. Rolewise. To call this a "simple" or "basic" game anymore would be a sheer lie...although saying that it IS a bit simplier than most games wouldn't be. That would be just a minor exaggeration. But seriously, it's now way, far more complex than I had planned, but it's not too horrible. I'm also considering making it a closed set up, if only for the fact that there's a lot of roles (that, of course, are canon to the SMB's universe) so it would make a mass name claim that breaks the game...much more lame to actually do. This isn't a sign up thread...that official one will come a little later (like in a week or two), but if you still want to sign up this early, that's fine. I'll just transfer your name over to the list when I make that topic. Still, don't sign up this early unless you know you can actually play in the game.

I'm not currently in any games, so I'm certainly interested in playing. However, I will be out of contact Thanksgiving week and a couple weeks around Christmas. How much of a problem would that be?
In terms of balancing, I'm sure you know what you're doing. But don't depend on lameness from preventing a mass claim. There's going to be a mass claim in one of our games sooner or later. Players are now more comfortable considering it. So, if you don't want one, there either needs to be an obvious-to-all pro-Town reason to not mass claim, or a mass claim must not throw the game to any side.

So, if you don't want one, there either needs to be an obvious-to-all pro-Town reason to not mass claim, or a mass claim must not throw the game to any side. Yeah, I'm wagering all that in. Really, it's good because some of the characters in the SMB universe could go either way...so it's good to have that WIFOM stuff out there. Even if a mass name claim happened, it probably wouldn't help much from where I'm looking right now. I'll try to do the same with roles. Total Lost, get back to that table. You're supposed to be shakin' hip on it! /facebook injoke

There's going to be a mass claim in one of our games sooner or later. It happened Day 2 in T2 on the SDMB, and pretty well won the game for the Town, although it only happened because it was so obviously pro-Town. Open setups take all of the uncertainty out of the decision.

Open setups take all of the uncertainty out of the decision. True. But with the all PFK game you, NAF and I are working on, even if I do it open setup, or semi-open setup, there will still be uncertainty. After all, some roles will be stronger than the others, but the question is do you want them as a strong ally or do you want to take them out because they are a strong opponent. It'll be interesting to see how mass claim will enter into that one. (And if it's open or semi-open, you two will be eligible to play if you don't want to help mod it.) I got to start working on that again one of these days. I've been a bit occupied with other things.

I'd like to join as well. Only issues I'll have with scheduling are nights. And by nights, I mean late nights, like 10pm-6am EST. I work overnights in retail. Also means I'll be working days like Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve almost all day.

It was a very odd combination of circumstances. The game was entirely open. There was a particular scum role that would very obviously benefit from a mass claim, but that role happened to die on Night One. At the start of Day Two, the specific numbers of players out there meant that we could mass claim and cut the lynch pool more or less in half (the Scum could have, but didn't, mess us up by counterclaiming a lot of power roles and only one vanilla counterclaim, which was my nightmare scenario). Instead, all but one scum claimed vanilla, which turned the pool of players into a small one and just dramatically limited scum options. Not poor design, necessarily; even the best design can fall victim to an unlikely confluence of events.

Not poor design, necessarily; even the best design can fall victim to an unlikely confluence of events. I certainly don't fault pedescribe for how it happened. I didn't realize how powerful the mass claim would be until Day Two, when you pointed it out. It's definitely something that future game designers have to keep in mind, though.

Also, one more vanilla townie would have given the game a totally different direction. We would have had more room to hide. I don't know that it was all that far off from being right. I think that when balancing you just need to take open setup into account and award the town some bonus points for it. Anyway. I can't play, but I want to watch! Spoiler me please!
