It seems like this is occasionally floated around as a possibility. But I just can't see it, it seems:
--Gigantically tacky, and --Horribly disrespectful to people with real RL issues.
Does this actually happen?

Does this actually happen? God I hope not. As someone who does have frequent RL issues, that would suck. I figure we are all on the honor system to tell the truth about non game related stuff.

Yeah, that'd be sucky. I have, on occassion, deliberately disappeared for blocks of time as Scum, but when I have, I've offered no concrete explanations. Any time I claim real-life circumstances interfering with game play, it's been because real-life circumstances have interfered with game play.
Otherwise, what's the point?

I think generic excuses are fine even if they aren't especially truthful. Like claiming you were busy, when in actuality you were just sitting around being bored. However I'd expect that if you say you went out town without Internet access that you were actually out of town with no Internet access.

If I found out that someone did that (I suppose they would have to admit it, because I'm not coming to your house to check up on ya), I wouldn't want to play with that person anymore. I think I would *actually* be pissed off, not just game-pissed like I sometimes get.
With hawkeye's example of just being "busy", I can accept that from another player, but I wouldn't personally use that as a reason for being away unless it were true.

I've faked real life issues many times. But never for a game. Always to get out of other stuff (like work or having to meet or talk to someone). I don't get on with people well in real life or in real life situations. So if I'm ever scheduled to meet somone (I.E. I have a doctor's appointment, my maids are ready to come over to do their monthly cleaning, I agree to meet someone on IM to webcam for them, even knowing FAMILY is going to come over), I will go as far as to just lie and make up something to get out of it (I'm sick, I need to go somewhere else, I'll be in Zambia, it's my mom's birthday, etc). In the far distant past I've faked many things to get out of going to work (back when I had jobs and was able to work). I even went so far, one day, to say my father had died (he hadn't yet, though). Think of it or me as tacky or horrible all you want, I don't care. Working back then put huge amounts of stress on me and led to one or two nervous breakdowns...which is why, today, I don't do it (well, not so much don't as can't). But it all goes back to that interacting with people in real life. I'm seriously messed up in that regard. I don't like real life people stuff that much. Never would do it for a game, though. A game isn't real life. ETA: Well, neither is webcamming with someone but they can still see you live, so it's the same thing to me. ETA2: Hell, I did it with Santos Rugger. I was supposed to meet him here when he stopped by but I flaked on that even though I remembered the day he was here. I just couldn't bring myself to go. I got so nervous, ill, sweaty, stressed out. That's what happens to me when I have to meet someone. So I lie to get out of it.

I sort of figured that's what happened, but I totally understood, so I wasn't going to mention it. No worries, man, I'm in that area all the time (was actually invited to go to a rugby tourny as a "social captain" since I still can't play yet on the first weekend in December, but probably won't). If you're feeling up to it, just let me know. No pressure. As for the OP, I may be a bit jaded, but I like to think that the people I associate with won't lie about things outside of the game in order to gain an advantage within the game. Although, one has to admit that this part of Idle's post is pretty funny: So if I'm ever scheduled to meet somone (I.E. I have a doctor's appointment... I will go as far as to just lie and make up something to get out of it (I'm sick...

My life is already plenty full of last minute conflicts and random asteroids flying in from left field. No need to make any up.
As far as work goes though, I consider a "mental health day" as 100% justified use of sick time.
