The other one is playing this game...hehehe! OK, my mind went off on a tangent, an I didn't bring anyone along with me. Mitey, the self-proclaimed polygamist, has gizmo as her avatar.

Because I've played this game over and over and over and over and over and over and I have watched some variation on the current theme play out over and over and over and over and over and over and over. No one's voting for him yet, but here's how this will go: we'll putz around talking about his claim for two or three more real-life days. Nothing useful will emerge from the discussion, because ultimately a Day One vanilla claim - while I think it's unwise and reflective of a principally self-centered game-view - isn't really Scummy in any meaningful sense. Eventually, a few hardy souls will try to change the subject, and a few votes will be placed on someone. They'll role-claim, and the whole Town will back off. Then, toward the deadline, with no better obvious option, there will be a rush of votes for molefan, who will be lynched. And frankly, I'm sick of that pattern. So, you've told us what we are doing wrong, can you now tell us what to do right?

I know it's a generic one, but I've been using it on this site for about a year now; I don't know if other people rely on them as much as I do for poster identification, but I totally thought that was my post when I first read it. Well, it's likely that either the nameclaim is true or, if false, molefan/shaggy's role has a safe claim to avoid duplication. Just the name isn't going to prove shaggy's alignment one way or the other, even if other normally "bad" names show up later on a side* (remember, Idle's taken into account a mass nameclaim when creating roles). So, best to consider the claim a null tell for now, unless shaggy exhibits more solidly scummy traits.
I don't know what story would suggest as "what to do right" but we could shoot for skipping Step One of his prediction ("putz around talking about his claim for two or three more real-life days").

You guys have all ragging on molefan/shaggy for giving himself more survivability by claiming on Day 1 - but come on, admit it, it always sucks to die even if your side wins. (Who me, bitter? A little. ) And now that he's been subbed, shaggy might not even play the same way. Onto other topics - I never see any point in guessing about a closed setup on Day One. After one Day/Night cycle, sure, we'll have a better idea, but for all we know, there's a Flying Pumpkin That Shoots Lasers Out of Its Ass. ;D

They aren't lasers, they're torpedoes, and they only kill human-like characters, not spiky turtles or mushrooms or bullets or clouds or wobbly bombs
So, it seems me might struggle off to a random.org lynch...which Scum won't do :-( They have no honor.

so after reading the last posts, I have to say that I can not really undo the claim that molfan did but I can assure you all that I play differant in that i put the town winning above me living or dying. I try really try hard and will do so to put what is in the best interest of the town first and before all else.
Sorry for the avatar, I thought it was kinda cute.....

Sorry for the avatar, I thought it was kinda cute..... No worries, but thank you. Trust me shaggy. You don't want people to confuse your posts with Ruggers. I'm sorry to see Molefan go - and really didn't think I was being to hard on the poor guy. Whoops! Happy to see SHAGGY and SQUID in the game - and really don't know where to go from here. Might be about this time of Day 1 where I start talking about lurkers... but we just had a weekend so it might be a bit early for that

How do you define a "lurker?" This isn't rhetorical; when someone starts pointing fingers and slinging votes for lurkers, I like to check that we both use the word the same way before arguing.

I like that idea - we get to talk and still the game will move in a (I think) good direction! To me a lurker is: A person who doesn't post at all (without saying they are going away or even while being online and posting elsewhere) A person who only post fluff and funny - but when real subjects comes up... they seem to vanish and only re-surface when all is calm again Come to think about it: A lurker could also be a person not voting at all. Anyone can miss a vote on a Day (if they are away)... but to consistently not vote is a kind of lurking as well.

I think it's pretty hard to define a lurker in a completely consistent way. I do think there's a difference:
Non-participating: Someone not posting at all (should be mod-killed or subbed)
Lurking: Is hard to define. I can fall into the following categories: - Posting only fluff (can still be an avid poster) - Dodging though questions, and generally staying under the radar - Somone posting very rarely
That being said, I don't think we can determine "real" lurkers yet, as we're just coming out of a weekend. However, given a few days, I'd be all for voting of someone from the lurker pool, as the chances of a scum-slip on day one is pretty low. Then again, a no-lynch would also be okay with me if we really don't have a good target, and we stand to gain no information from lynching a person. I'd rather lynch a townie that gives us information about five other players than hope to randomly select a scum member by means of random.org. Sure, we might get lucky, but the odds just aren't that good.
Bleh, I don't know if a good day one strategy exists, but I don't see any better option than to lynch a lurker right now.

Day One

Post by special on Nov 24, 2008 7:52:15 GMT -5
Here's the thing: From reading molefan's comments regarding the Skrull Planet game subsequent to the game I've come to understand that molefan has his own very specific ideas about what constitutes good pro-Town strategy in Mafia, and that his ideas are completely and totally antithetical to my own. He's also very clearly less than thrilled about what he perceives as poor play on the part of Towns. But his strategic views - while, again, I disagree with them - are not in and of themselves evidence of scumminess, and we're not going to get anywhere spending the whole Day discussing him in the way that we're discussing him. Tomorrow morning, I'll reread the four pages so far and see if anything else jumps out at me. For now, though, I'm tired and cranky and going to bed. Something about this displeases me. I can almost see this as a set-up. So far, the only even mildly suspicious thing has been molefan/shaggy's claim. And this seems to be a basis for casting suspicion on anyone who, as we approach the end of Day 1, decides to vote based on this. Why? If that's the best thing we have, why not vote? or is a non-vote better? or a random vote? I realize things have changed now with shaggy here...but this set up also seems suspicious to me.

Hey, story any reason you are stepping up for moley other than the goodness of your heart? Kind of fucking odd. Seems kind of weird. And I agree that moley is doing some off the wall stuff, but why get in the middle of it? Because I've played this game over and over and over and over and over and over and I have watched some variation on the current theme play out over and over and over and over and over and over and over. No one's voting for him yet, but here's how this will go: we'll putz around talking about his claim for two or three more real-life days. Then, toward the deadline, with no better obvious option, there will be a rush of votes for molefan, who will be lynched. And frankly, I'm sick of that pattern. And honestly, peeker? Characterizing what I'm saying as "sticking up for" molefan tells me you're not really reading my actual posts for comprehension. molefan may be Scum, or he may be Town. I don't know and, for the purposes of this discussion, I don't care. What I care about is the quality of the arguments against him, which is poor, and would be poor regardless of his alignment. oops, I quoted the wrong post from story. I'd been re-reading and went to the right page, but the wrong post. This is the one I meant to refer to. Sorry
