Recruiting is probably the most controversial ability in mafia, because the team you were working with you suddenly want to lose, meaning it punishes good play and rewards bad play. Okay, but here's an idea:
Whenever a player is recruited, they win with their old team and/or their new team. ' That way, players who are worried about the win don't have to fret about how well they played. The only problem would be if the recruited player sold out his or her teammates for his old team, but I don't think any of is that competitive.

But then what is the incentive to have that player play for the new team? Say a townie gets recruited to scum, what's to stop the player from just saying "Hey, the scum are..." I mean, it would be a dick move and all, but other than that...

I think recruiting can be balanced, if you combine the recruiter with a mad-bomber type role. Recruiter needs X% percent of living players tagged, and each "tagged" player has the option of changing his/her alignment and wincon to match the recruiters.
Depending on other players, you can balance this by saying the recruiter has the option of offering tagged players that option, and then recruited players may or may not know who the recruiter is, etc.

I like KidV's idea of recruiting. Other than that, the only type of recruiting I approve of is somebody who knows ahead of time they may be recruited. One role I was considering for a scrapped game was a role who was Town to begin with, but was informed in his role PM that if the scum ever tried to kill him, he'd switch sides and join their team instead. That way, he could play in a way that benefited him, if he wanted to play as scum he could try and bait them into trying to off him to join their team.
