I hate, hate, hate the new header. What the hell is up with that. It's ugly and it's a pain in the ass. When it goes to two lines the script on the rest of the page jumps and the opposite happens when it goes from two lines back to one. So I'm trying to click on the last post thingie and suddenly the page jumps and I'm actually clicking on the poster. No, thank you, I don't want to send a personal message to poster x. I want to read what Poster x just posted. Idle do something about this. Resize the font on the header or something. It is totally annoying. BLEH. Hm, I'm not seeing it jump to two lines. Are you talking about the new news fader? --FCOD

Yes, the news fader. And now that I'm on my thinkpad it doesn't do it. Very strange on the Macbook it jumps between single and double lines and drives me insane.

I'ma gripe and grumble because I got my stupid blackberry in the stupid mail, and the stupid thing doesn't work. Luckily, the company is on top of things and sending me a replacement asap, but damnitall, it is so freakin' inconvenient. grrr.

For some reason, I received a piece of post after 6pm today. This means, as usual, that the post office screwed around with my mail (they have a bad habit of losing, redirecting or delaying mail to me specifically) but that some kind neighbour, seeing the "Private and Confidential" tag, bought it round.
The letter basically said "Thanks but no thanks" about that job I applied for last week.
Yet another waste of my time and effort.

My co-worker is going on vacation for 6 weeks, and I just got handed one of his responsibilities to cover while he is gone. Unfortunately, it one of those time-sinks of a crappy band-aid to pick up slack due to the ineptitude of a variety of other departments. My favorite kind of extra work. Did I mention that we didn't even get an insultingly small bonus this year? Apparently they think that there is some loophole. <if null != "insulting">

I know that kinda sounded shitty of me in hindsight, since I have a job, and an alleged opportunity to earn a bonus which I should be thankful for and such, but Security is so thankless that it is almost an anti-thank job, and money is money.

Well, I wanted cold water... I put a bottle of water in the fridge (just over hree-quarters full, fortunately). I then forgot about it for two hours. Now it's cold alright, but I can't drink it because it won't pour.

Some sort of crawly thing dropped onto my shoulder the other day and took a bite out of me. I didn't get a good look at it but have a sneaking suspicion it was a centipede. So I had the initial ouch, then it itched a bit but not too bad. Today it's a swollen 6 inch long oozy yuckky mess. *aren't ya glad ya kept reading* Mrsin thinks I'm cooking up a pod-person in there.

I meant to write "freezer" of course. Fridges don't generally cause water to freeze, unless you put the water too close to the coolant units.

Not a good day today. It started with me learning that I was not going to be offered one of the jobs I went for, then went downhill from there. Right now, I'm seriously wondering whether I'll ever get another job.

I'm a backroom type.
I was in the UK Civil Service for 15 years, mainly financial monitoring and business planning, with a couple of years IT support thrown in in the middle.
Now? There were ten posts in the competition I went for, and I was rejected for all of them. If I can't finish in the top 10, my interview skills are worse than I thought.

The woman who handles operations for one of my applications has been sick since last week. Today is one of the 2 mornings a week that I spend a few hours at the location of her and the rest of my engineering/operations team members. She is currently 3 cubes away, coughing or clearing her throat every 10 seconds.
GO HOME FOR FUCK SAKE.
I love these dotted line managerial relationships, where I have to email her actual manager and suggest that he make her go home.
Pandora and earbuds are my friends.

*Sigh*
Yesterday morning I was happily reading through my current Mafia games. I got to the very last (Giraffe) and opened it, only to realise something seemed ... odd. All the posts I was seeing had been made the previous night.
I hit "Refresh"" and got a message about not being able to find the pages. At that point, I realised that the modem only had the "power" light on.
Sisconnect and try again? Nothing.
Reeboot? Nothing.
It turned out that some enterprising souls had gone copper mining up the road from me. The copper they had mined was the main cable connecting my road to the telephone exchange. I was therefore without any Internet connection for approximately 25 hours. Good eh?
In a last ironic twist, I was just turning off to go out to the library and post from there to apologise (for BT's estimate of the time for repair was four days) when I realised that the modem had hooked us back to the internet. So here I am once again.

So my workplace (IT) wouldn't let me get the computer I wanted because "they couldn't support it, it's not standard." So I got the computer they "support", it cost hundreds of dollars more than the one I wanted, didn't have the memory, speed, hard drive, hard drive speed or equivalent warranty.
In order to use the office printer and get office 2007 installed I had to submit it to IT for their "help". In the process of doing this they installed a "standard" operating system so they could provide me with maximum (read minimal) support.
Now; none of the hot-keys associated with the computer work. The touch screen feature doesn't work. The eject from docking station feature doesn't work. In addition, updates don't work. "Oh, sorry, we can't handle that, it's not a standard type computer!!!! Our system only works with standard type computers." SO... why did you make me buy this inferior computer that you cannot support in the first place? Why not let me get the cheaper, better computer, that I wanted that you couldn't support?
Can I go back to the original operating system, the one that, ya know, actually works? "No, we don't support that."
Fuck me, your not supporting me now, grrrrrrr. I have the disks and I'm going to use em.

Another IT grump.
I can no longer use Windows Messenger. It requires that I install a new version, then won't let me install the new version. Now my OS is old and creaky, so maybe it's time to bow to the inevitable and install service pack 2?
Or maybe just throw my PC away, after all the horror stories about it.

Ok, I figured out what IT did. When they installed their preferred OS they didn't bother to reload any of the computer specific drivers for my tablet. That would have actually involved work instead of just pushing a button. When I brought it back to them they tried to reinstall only the hot-key driver and one ap driver. Unfortunately those ap's require three other aps to work and the guy didn't read down far enough to figure that out (I was watching, while the guy did it). So I got the hot-keys back, am able to actually eject the MF'er from the dock and can set up to do presentations again. And along the way I reinstalled the battery management ap, which ya kind of want if you don't want to haul around the charger with you all the fucking time.
What I still can't do is update all the updates they removed except by going thru them one by one because they removed the system update installer* too, bastards! There are only 173 of them.
I am still grrrrrr.
PS: I watched the IT guy hit the system update button at least 1/2 a dozen times yesterday to try and get the deleted drivers back. Each time it sent the computer into an endless loop that could only be ended by restarting the computer.
Final question: why are these guys so arrogant?

Laid off with no warning today at about 1:30pm. Thanks for making me work half of the damn day, gastards. Due to the sensitive nature of my job it was effective immediately and I had to hand over my lovely little mac and pack up my cube today. Based on the reactions of the other members of my 20+ department, they were all as surprised as I was, and they all seemed quite pissed to hear the news. It was flattering to see a few of them cloistered off with management to yell on my behalf. At least they gave me a decent severance package. It may be time for Shay and I to take the plunge and try to move north to Humboldt. Closer to my mom and the 60 acre family homestead that she's been taking care of all by her 65 yo self, but also into a very depressed rural economy, and the nearest "town" over an hour and a half away. Decisions, decisions...
