I haven't been very active of late, having been under serious pressure and work plus spending the last 3-4 weeks neck deep in house reno's I'm hoping to get back into a game here shortly when a new one starts. In the meantime, a different forum I hang out on has decided to try running some mafia games. (although they insist on calling it werewolf, but whatever.) Most of the players have neve rplayed before which is making it very interesting. Thing is I think the organiser has made a big blunder with his roles PM's, and I want ot take advantage of it ;D Have a look: In this game the lineman is vanilla town. The journeyman is a back up for the Blitzer. which is a tie-breaking role. But the operative point here is vanilla town has been given a secret handshake in their knowledge about the Journeyman being hidden. I'm trying to figure out how to come up with a scheme to confirm all or the majority of the linemen. The only thing I've thought of so far will make it a one time deal only. Handy if I want to be selfish to save myself, but not very useful in the larger context. Ideas from any of you master game theorists out there?

I would casually mention that you know the Journeyman is hidden and see who questions you and who agrees.
It's easier to work in reverse, spotting people who clearly don't know the Journeyman angle.
You could claim "Probably not the Journeyman, but I don't know for sure, how about you?"
You won't be able to confirm all the vanilla town but if you can get three or four you are golden. The problem with that plan is you might out a power role in the process, but that generally isn't that big a deal as long as it isn't too many and everyone makes damn sure that the doctor knows who to protect that Night.

I ethically oppose this as cheating, but agree with NAF.

Is it really cheating in taking advantage of a poor design choice? I'm not sure how ready any of these guys are for a full blown game. I am getting slammed for coming out with a random.org vote early in the piece on Day 1. I will definitely post up the board details to see if anyone is interested in coming across.

No it's absolutly not. Asking for help might be, maybe, but exploiting the design of the game is just playing mafia.

No, it's not cheating, and it isn't wrong. It's the game designers job to make his game isn't so easily broken, and he may have failed here.
I'd keep it in your pocket, use it as a trap. Wait 'till somebody you suspect claims vanilla, then nail 'em. Get 'em fighting, then mention the Journeyman being hidden and wait to see if they smile and nod, or question you. You'll handshake 2 or 3 vanilla in the process before everybody else catches on, and maybe trip a scum or two in the process.
Apropo of nothing, but I've noticed, running and now playing on Giraffe, is that it's easy for new players to get very anti-veteran, if there's a lot of them.

For the record, I was referring to the ethical ambiguity of asking for suggestions in exploiting the loophole, not the exploiting in general.

yeah... exploiting the game is one thing.... sharing your PM on a public board outside of your game and asking for advice there is completely out of line. You pretty much just provided town with a huge onus if they happened to find this site and see this thread.

You pretty much just provided town with a huge onus if they happened to find this site and see this thread. Yeah, but that same logic goes to Scum who happen to find this board. But I guess the difference is that there are more town than scum, and thus more chances that town will find this board than scum. But, still, I'd say the problem is simply in asking for help while the game is still going. Because then it's not just you playing, but all of those who help you as well.
