Whoo! That was a ride. I don't ever want to be an investigator again. It was extremely frustrating for me to try to determine who the best investigative target each night was. The way I played it in SMB was pretty much the following, in order of importance. The overarching strategy of a detective should be to confirm town, rather than out scum. (There are situational exceptions, natch, but that applies to any mafia strategy.) 1.) Investigate someone who was really involved in the events of the day (whether being an active poster, or someone who survived a last minute vote switch, or some other way). This is important in the early game, where data points are lacking. As the game goes on, this strategy becomes less useful, but is pretty useful the first night or two. 2) Investigate someone you think is a townie who's come under heat. This is less important in the early Days and very important later. 3) Remove WIFOM from supposed "slips". (See my investigation of Kat in SMB.) (Note: 4 and 5 are pretty much equal in importance, depending on the state of the game.) 4) Pick someone who you are sure are townie, just to do nothing else but confirm them. 5) Investigate a claimant. This is very situational. An otherwise testable claim shouldn't be investigated. A contested claim that hasn't been sorted out via lynch is frequently better left to the vigilante, if there is one. A lying claimant that could be devestating to town might require an investigation as well. There are so many permutations of when this one comes into play, that you just got to puzzle out if adding more information to an established datapoint is better than creating an entirely new one. 6) Investigate someone you think is scum. You might be surprised to find out they're town, or you might find a 3rd party. Or you might just find scum, which isn't a horrible result, if a bit of a waste of pro-town resources.

The strategy about who to investigate must also take into account if the investigator is out or not. If you're still hidden, it's generally better to look at players who you think are likely to survive until at least mid-game. There's no point to finding out the truth about a player who's going to be lynched Tomorrow. Unless you're willing to claim yourself at that time.

I had decided to gamble in SMB and investigated MiteyMouse on Night 2, with the decision that since the Doctor was well hidden and so were the Masons, that I would reveal myself on Day 3 if needed. Fortunately, MiteyMouse became a non-issue for the next two days, so I claimed on Day 5. Another reason why number 2 in my list becomes much more important in the later Days. If you're hidden, you don't necessarily want to investigate someone who you think will get lynched (or scum will target, for that matter). But once you're out, your main purpose is to reduce the unconfirmed pool.

I'm still bitter about the Miller setup in my PM.... I knew once IS got to me I was doomed. Though I had forgotten that the Town also would just lynch 3rd Party Players too just because they could spare the lynch. If I had thought about that, I would have at least lied and claimed Town. But I figured my actions would have shown my intentions (as I WAS trying to play as pro-town as I possibly could after the first two Days-post SachDying). As soon as SisterCoyote died, I knew which side I wanted to play for- and I tried to do my best to help out.

I never knew if I could trust you, but a lot of what you said and did made sense to me. And the way you voted for every one lynched was pretty amazing!!

I love Roosh's posts in every game. 3) Remove WIFOM from supposed "slips". (See my investigation of Kat in SMB.) What did I say in SMB? I forget.

Dotchan's (i.e. scum godfather's) post-death WIFOM reveal of you and pedescribe being scum. Neither one of you were, but she gave me a nice Townie target to investigate.

Had it been closer, we might have been forced to trust you. And it isn't that you weren't trustable... I was pretty sure you were telling the truth. But you're Roosh, and any player that isn't Town isn't to be trusted 100% anyway. So it was a pretty easy decision, for me, anyway.
