FTR, my girlfriend was lit major from a university with a very good program and she didn't have to read Heart of Darkness for it, either. Though she did read it in high school.
I've never actually read the book myself. I just knew it was where Coppola took the role from.

I know what Jayne refers to, and it's nothing Firefly related. I just thought, that since you were Jayne in a previous game, that maybe the Great and Glorious Great and Glorious mods were trying to make it easy to find out by saying you were the Jayne I was looking for here. Oh well. Right now though, I don't think anyone is aware that they're Jayne. It might be a name that only I call them by, therefore they're unaware of it, that would just make it a pain in the ass to figure out who it would be. So I'm still searching... Do you know your role name? Yes, Zan.

I also know what my name refers to, but it doesn't really reveal much about the extent of what my supposed powers are.
It's all very mysterious.

Gastard Mafia. What the Hell is going on? No one seems to know.
Very diverse, though. Lolcat, Night Watchman, Demon, Duke, Esquire, Super.
But we're not done yet. Someone searches for killers Of Serial type.
We even have one Of our very own special Executioners.
And then there's Dotchan. Obviously Innocent AKA Rugger
Finally molefan. His claim: Double-You-Tee-Eff? Heart of Darkness' Kurt?
Bemusement abounds. I'll think I'll drink the glass of wine in front of me.

*slow clap for HØØpy*
(It's finally happening; I'm starting the slow clap. All of my 80s movie fantasies are coming true. Or maybe I've just got the Clap. I forget which.)
I especially liked the "Double-You-Tee-Eff?" in line 17. It works for me on so many levels.

Thae's six syllables. BZZZ'?

Thae's six syllables. BZZZ'? How? Duke is clearly I. Squire is clearly I, so Es-quire is II, Super is II. So we have I + II + II = V. Unless you pronounce it Es-qua-ire, in which case you're pronouncing it wrongly. And on that note, I'm going to bed.

Or do you pronounce it Es-qwai-er.
In which case, you still are adding I syllable II many.
It's a II syllable word.

Cookies, a word of caution:
Molefan currently has two votes (Rugger and pedescribe). If your next coded post includes a vote for molefan then that will start the countdown. So be careful...

Or do you pronounce it Es-qwai-er. In which case, you still are adding I syllable II many. It's a II syllable word. Actually, I would agree with Duke that "quire" is a two syllable word. Consider the words fire, fryer, friar, wire etc. They all rhyme with quire and they are all two syllable words (surely you agree that fryer is two syllables). So esquire is three syllables (es-qwai-uh). And indeed dictionary.com shows it as three syllables.

Also Klutz officially voted a marshmallow. Seriously. Actually, come to think of it...
Vote marshmallow.
I'll take any outs I can get.

Here in the country music capital of the world, I think you'd find a number of people for whom all of those words are only one syllable. If I were to get mad (that's when my accent gets thick), and for some reason was ranting and raving about an esquire, it would be a two syllable word. It would be pronounced "ess-quar" in that case. Just sayin'.

...And upon further research, Webster's says it's two syllables. I'm inclined to trust that over dictionary.com.

What, no bandwagonners for that marshmallow? It's a VERY scummy marshmallow. I think we need to take it out now before it can do some real damage.
(Yep, I think I've lost it...)

Post by bufftabby on Aug 2, 2008 9:56:15 GMT -5
I would say "hire" as one syllable and "higher" as two.
In fact, dictionary.com *does* list "esquire" as having only two syllables: es•quire. I see in the pronunciation key where it seems to have three as well, but using the actual phonetic alphabet pronunciation as opposed to where the just have it spelled out phonetically, one can see that it's still two syllables. Think of it this way: how many times does your chin come down when you say the word? It's really only twice, unless you are overemphasizing the last part in a way you would not during normal speech. Think of the word "choir". I would say it's clearly a single syllable as well.

Dear Hockeyguy,
I'm your long lost sister Jayna. (Check your PM and see if it says Jayne or Jayna.)
Love HockeyMonkey
PS: I was sure you had picked up on my clues. You are my brother Zan. Together we are the Wonder Twins! My PM gave me the impression that your PM was identical to mine and you knew what our power is. (It actually says (paraphrasing)that you are Zan or Jayna, feel free to claim whichever one you want, we are too lazy to write two PM's) Hmrmf.

Would ye like ter defend yersself? Sstop yer distrac'ionss. Wuerdesst du dich verteidigen? Hal'sst deine Ablenkung. Erm... I have defended myself, right up until the last page. Nobody else has, despite the fact that I'm apparently supposed to have three partners. The only real evidence against me is a word on a page referring three times to "dirt" written in a notepad that's never been found. Every other bit of evidence that I can find is WIFOM, apart from the Bufftabby mistake, which is meaningless. (As I've already pointed out, would I deliberately lie about something that could be - and was - provably contradicted in two seconds flat?) I have a role that nobody else has claimed and that fits into the "theme" of the game, but I can't see any way to prove it. Rajaat could but apparently he'd prefer to see a townie lynched than to "waste" his investigation. Because a wasted lynch is so much more beneficial to the town, right? Look, it doesn't matter anyway. If I'm going out (and unless Rajaat uses that investigation, it seems that I am) then let me go out in good humor instead of jumping through useless hoops until the end, ok?
