I probably shouldn't play again until I've developed thicker skin, but I've been brainstorming some ideas about future Mafia games that I don't mind running, as long as I have the time to do votecounts.
I made a list, but I left that one in Boca and I'm currently in Orlando, so here's just what I remember off the top of my head:
*Romance of the Three Kingdoms - Three (yes, count 'em, THREE) scumgroups that must keep at least one townie alive in order to win the game. Townies can play survivor or attempt to jump-start the Communist Revolution by killing off the scum. Other roles would probably just be standard.
*Rebel Scum - Star Wars themed mafia with the Stormtroopers as town. Semi-closed setup (i.e., I tell you what roles there are, but not how many of each).
*Down at the Precinct - Good Cops, Bad Cops, Cops with Sanity issues...
*Who Killed Mr. Boddy? - Inspired by mafiascum.net's "Clue" Mini-Mafia (it's unfinished, so I don't know what the setups are), some kind of themed mafia with a semi-closed setup.
*Emergency Room (not the TV show) - A game of Doctors, Nurses, Quacks, and Killers.
*Spartacus - All the roles are named Spartacus (except maybe the scum, who are named...Brian? ;D). Describing what your role does causes the role to lose all effectiveness. ;D
Feedback welcomed.

Multiple mafia groups make it tough to distinguish scum from town, because the scum get to actively scum hunt without sabotaging themselves. Nice twist. Similarly, there was a Harry Potter mafia where Harry, Ron and Hermione turned out to be scum. This, I like. Sorting out that mess would be a blast. I lay dibs on Harvey Keitel. I ran Clue mafia on Misetings, here. Check it out, if you like, it was a fairly short game. Also interesting. Believe it or not, it's been done! Robinson Crusoe mafia, which featured a large cast of unrelated cameo roles from other games, included several spartacuses. No reason not to run with the idea again, though, as I'm sure it would have different twists.

I'd love the idea of a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, where everyone is given a role (even if its just a townie role), but that all the roles are famous literary people, with maybe some of them actually have special roles, but others just simply are a name.
Makes it a bit more interesting then for all rather than a "Vanilla townie" sorta role. Or even more weirder,
Have it so each role could have multiple endings- such as a certain role could win with one side, o another, and the tricky thing would be realizing that your group of "Townies", one or two of them could back stab the town and actually play for their own separate win.
Or I'd just like to see maybe like historical themes too, like WWI, with groups being nations and the like.
I love literary and historical sorta stuff, so anything that ties into something else is infinitely cooler than just mafia, townie, cop, doc sorta games.

All of this is tentative, of course. And yes, I spent the whole afternoon thinking this up. I have no life. ;D { Romance of the Three Kingdoms } - Flavor - ( wiki for the win!) Eastward do the waters of the Great River roll, Its waves on the heroes take their toll. Right and error, might and loss all turn to vain, Yet the green hills still remain, And countless times sinks the red sun. Old fishermen on the river's shore Long accustomed to the season's sights Make merry over a jug of wine. How many tales of yonder lore Are told among those laughing times? At the dawn of the third century A.D., the Latter Han dynasty was seeing endgame its final days. As the niceties of civilization crumbled, three factions arose to vie for power: to the North, the Wei faction; to the West; the Shu faction; and to the East, the Wu faction. Unfortunately for them, this time the common people wasn't going to take the resultant bloodbath lying down... - Roles - The Wei, Shu, and Wu are three independent factions of two Goons each and a one-shot crosskill immunity. 1 Super Doctor, who has the option of: *self-protection against all kills *protection of another player against all kills (self becomes vulnerable) *protection of anther player against a faction of the doctor's choice (self only has 50% protection against any kills) 3 Weak Doctors (who do not know each others' identity) who can each block one kill from the Wei, Shu, or Wu faction. 1 Vigilante, who has the option of a Night kill. 14 Vanilla (12 player version: Wei/Shu/Wu Mafia 1 each, crosskill immune 3 weak Doctors 1 Vigilante 6 Vanilla) - Win Conditions - A faction wins if it is the last faction standing and at least one Peasant remains alive. The Pro-Town roles win if they can eliminate all of the factions. The Peasants win collectively if they can eliminate all of the factions, or individually with whichever faction that remains. - Setup Notes - *100% Open setup, including role PMs (sorry, vanillas! No secret handshake for you! ) *Full death reveal *Roles lose effectiveness if claimed in any way, shape, or form

The Pro-Town roles all lose their effectiveness if they claim. A very nice setup, but I wonder -- why this rule?

The Pro-Town roles all lose their effectiveness if they claim. A very nice setup, but I wonder -- why this rule? It's a tentative rule to add a disincentive to the power roles claiming. This is a setup that could potentially be broken by a mass-claim, even if the role PMs aren't made public; anybody who knows Chinese history would be able to clue out who belongs to which faction (except in the case of Zhang San, whose name is fictional).

I recently developed an itch to see if a Highlander-themed Mafia game would be feasible. It's on the back burner until Firefly Mafia is completed, though. (Highlander is my other other obsession.) After that, I have a whole brainload of SF and fantasy worlds that started clamoring for the chance to become a Mafia game. It would be so cool to have a Liaden Mafia game (either Liad vs Yxtrang or Korval vs DoI, like anyone knows what I'm talking about here) or a Jhereg-themed game (although I don't know which groups to use for that one, as I doubt a game with 17 different Mafias would work ). Or hell, an American Revolution theme with the British & Tories as Town and the Revolutionists as Scum!

Not done writing flavor text on the Cops one, but I definitely need help balancing it.
Right now I have:
X Bad Cops (i.e. Mafia)
1 Sane Detective (accurate results) 1 Insane Detective (inaccurate results) 1 Paranoid Detective (always guilty) 1 Naïve Detective (always innocent) 1 Manic-Depressive Detective (inaccurate on Even Days, guilty on Odd) 1 Delusional Detective (innocent on Even Days, inaccurate on Odd) 1 Schizophrenic Detective A (innocent on Even Days, guilty on Odd) 1 Schizophrenic Detective B (guilty on Even Days, innocent on Odd) 1 Deputy (takes over for the first Cop who dies)
1 Jailer (protown role-blocker)
X Incompetent Cops (i.e. Town)
Undercover FBI Agent (SK)

The Pro-Town roles all lose their effectiveness if they claim. I'm interested in how this is enforced. For example, "I am the Doctor" is a claim, but what about "If you lynch me I won't be able to protect anyone tonight"

For example, "I am the Doctor" is a claim, but what about "If you lynch me I won't be able to protect anyone tonight" First, I'd probably make it public knowledge that any power roles (no matter what alignment) lose effectiveness if claimed. Then, the players are allowed to discuss roles in general, but if they specifically refer to their own power in any way shape or form they lose their powers. (They can still breadcrumb if they want at their own peril.) I'm not sure what effect this has on game balance, though. But again, I'm not a fan of mass claiming, nor am I particularly in favor of forcing a lynchee to claim to save himself.

Oh, and of course name claiming counts as a claim, although if a player is clever enough to slip it under the Mod Radar I might let it go.

I'm now addicted to reading the hilarious games @ mafiascum.net.... =( My fav. ones though are the Post Restriction series. I like the idea where All the normal people are given some sort of posting restriction, while the mafia are just given the freedom of no restriction, but the note that they should probably have one "to blend in" with the town. That's the sort of idea that's geniusly fun, forcing people to create roles out of thin air.

I'd be interesting in helping to develop and mod an ER themed game. Would you like to see it more based on reality or on people's perception of the ER?

I'd be interesting in helping to develop and mod an ER themed game. Would you like to see it more based on reality or on people's perception of the ER? The "ER" thing is just a name. The actual theme of the game that I'm developing is Doctor "sanities", something like this: 7 Quacks (i.e., mafia) 1 Normal Doctor (100% effective) 1 Weak Doctor A (dies if protect target is targeted by killer(s)) 1 Weak Doctor B (dies if protects Mafia) 1 Naïve Doctor (0% effective) 1 Inconsistent Doctor A (100% Even, 0% Odd) 1 Inconsistent Doctor B (0% Even, 100% Odd) 1 Resident (takes over for the first Doctor that dies) 1 Anesthesiologist (roleblocker) 3 Janitors (masons) 1 Insane Asylum Escapee (SK, Nightkill immunity?) 8 Patients The only "ER" aspect of the game would be the flavor text.

dotchan, I like the looks of the ER theme as a beginning. Couple of questions: what's the point of the Naive Doctor? I'd also add in Nurses somehow. Maybe have them be 'Masons' instead of Janitors. Also I'd add in a investigative role, Master Clinician.

dotchan, I like the looks of the ER theme as a beginning. Couple of questions: what's the point of the Naive Doctor? The Naive Doctor is pretty much a bastard role, since the theme is "doctors". Well, since the "Nurse" is the standard rolename for "Back-up Doctor", I decided to leave that out of the game to avoid confusion. An investigative role may unbalance the game for the town, though. Part of the point of this game is to find out which doctor has what effectiveness, and root out the liars.

I had been thinking about different mafia set-ups. More fundamental changes than flavor changes. The Iiea that I like the best is to have a fragmented mafia. (Not different teams). So Team A has 2 members, team B has 2 members and team C has two members. Each TEAM gets one nightkill, but team A doesn't know who team B and C are. Each team can opt to investigate a player instead of killing and determine alignment. If they investigate mafia, the teams merge. This would have many nightkills at the start, but slow down as teams get killed off. Plus there is some hidden information from mafia.

Radom Theme idea:
Set on the set of Survivor, the TV show.
The scums would be the producer-selected plants who's job it is to stir up shit and conflict between the members of the cast for increased drama/ratings.
The townies would be the legitimate contestants.
You could possibly have another sub-grouping involving the crew.

If I ever felt the desire to run one, I'd base it on the setting of Midkemia, in honour of the first book I ever read that kept me up all night. (By which I mean I started it around 9:30pm and at 6 the following morning I had 50 pages to read - so of course that's when I had to start fighting sleep.)

Unfortunately I don't know enough about Lovecraft to run a mafia based on it, but wouldn't a completely closed setup work perfectly in that particular mythos?
To be even more evil, everybody gets some kind of mod PM at Night, either just as plain flavor, or it has some sort of effect the next Day.
