Day One

Post by tdpatriots12 on May 30, 2008 14:58:33 GMT -5
Yes, my internet is failing pretty bad at the moment as I type this from a fast food joint that happens to have wireless. But it costs money and I'd rather not sit here all day and bleed small bills. However, I am caught up and since I've got this connection for another half hour, I might as well make use of it by posting. So I had intended on Thursday (and this morning) to wake up to a few pages of Mafia analysis. Didn't happen, obviously, but that doesn't mean I can't think up anything to say after making sure I got all caught up. The votes seem all over the place at the moment, so I'll concentrate on what bothers me. There's bufftabby whose first post of this game made mention of a couple of theories about the setup, smudged Hal then FOSed me for not discussing what someone's post didn't say (or was it somehow implying that I wouldn't..?). But she seemed to let it go easily enough. Either she's a townie satisfied with the answer or scum realizing there's no traction in trying to lynch me based on something like that... ...her next post on a new subject is a vote for FlyingCowOfDoom. That's two substantive posts (since the others are mostly followups and questions about message board procedure) with one FOS and one vote. The next posts include a response to Czech where she goes on the record being against (in general) lynching a claimed role. I don't really have anything to say about this opinion one way or another. It all depends on the situation, I guess. The other is one against a Day extension. A Day extension would be a pro-town move, but I can see even townie players being against that kind of thing. So what have we got from bufftabby? *FOS on me *Vote on FCODMeh. I've seen Day One votes sway for less. But just to make sure I'm not about to do a partial OMGUS vote, I'll examine the case against FCOD. Beware: "I don't think scum would do this" argument coming. Yes, I know the guy who claimed Ash in Batman probably is the last person you want to hear one of these from, but it's what I feel in my gut. Back to the idea that Day One lynches can happen for almost any reason... If there's any point in which the scum benefit most from blending in, it's Day One. Everyone is (relatively, if ryjae is to be believed) completely clueless, and it's easy to hide in a sea of ignorance. There's an endless amount of possibilities to speculate on, and if you're careful (and lucky) you can last the whole day without pinging a soul. FCOD is defending his vote on Hal because he believes we should vote for who is the most scummy. I agree. I am not convinced by his argument, but I think if he was scum, he might have dropped it by now. Yes, in the back of my mind I am thinking I may regret this opinion down the road, but the following things lead me to believe Hal, and still think FCOD is town. * Hal basically claimed first. Definitely not a "scum wouldn't do this" thing, but it would be an incredibly risky play. What are the scenarios where this is a really smart play? If he's a bomb? Too many variables and I'd rather give our power roles an opportunity to do their work, at least Tonight. * FCOD is in my opinion either a determined townie or is playing a scum role very nicely. My current theories about mafia mean, though, that if given a choice between underestimating or overestimating a player... I should err on the side that they're not doing anything particularly impressive. Anyway, if they are, then I suppose I deserve to get fooled by it on Day One. Where does this leave my vote ~4 min from when I have to stop typing? I am never really happy with Day One votes, but I think the fact that bufftabby strikes me as an opportunist with her posts so far... I'm gonna have to: vote bufftabbyProbly won't be back to see how the rest of the Day goes, but who knows with Comcast. And I am motivated to vote bufftabby, because this caricature of FCoD's position, used as a primary foundation for a vote - and a vote for a player who, current count aside, is in a precarious position in his current role as acting prosecutor in the Case of the People v. Hal Briston - is disingenuous. At best (vote color removed for mod convenience) I think the way she misinterpreted my post regarding misterblockey's list is consistent with this kind of convenient caricature, isn't it?

Hockeyguy, just a suggestion, it might be worth voting the most unhelpful player thats least likely to be replaced, if that's the direction you're going to go.
I still see folks questioning the mechanics of the gag restriction on type2 possessed townies. I guess all I really need to do is point out exactly how much havoc it's caused today. Seems to me it probably did exactly what Atarus wanted it to do. Guess we'll find out more later.
Storyteller, I too got the impression that FCODs main goal was information gain, and I don't know that FCOD refuted that very vehemently in his rebuttal of my case on him.
So FCOD, information gain is not your primary goal. I'm willing to go with what you said when you voted him, then - you think he's lying. Except I'm not at all clear on why you think this.
I'm going to play demons advocate here, because I think he can't defend himself, or he would be.
What does Hal want us to think? Taking everything he's said and responded to and rolling it up into a big ball, Hal wants us to think that he's suffering from type2 possession, there's a time limit of some sort, lynching and letting the limit run out are roughly equal in terms of negative consequences to him and town, and he thinks there's somebody out there that can do something about it. Right so far? This is what Hal wants us to think?
So, lets look at why.
1) Hal is a vanilla type1 demon. This doesn't make sense, if you grant the above, because why would a type1 claim to be a type2 this early in the game? Horrible play. He's smarter than that.
2) Hal is vanilla town. Again, horrible play, whats his gain? No motivation here either.
3) Hal is some other kind of town, and good things will happen if he's investigated. Remotely plausible, I suppose.
4) Hal is a scum bomb. Ok, here's some motivation. But odds? Not very likely... there's better ways to get lynched, for one. Maybe he wants to be investigated instead, and something bad happens to the cop? Again, not likely. I don't see Atarus building a closed game and giving us color explicitly designed to lead our power roles straight into destruction. Doesn't make sense.
I can't think of anything else likely, off the top of my head. If you grant that the above are implausible, that leaves... Hal is suffering from a type2 possession similiar in nature to what we've conjectured, and Atarus has placed restrictions on what he can say about it. Nothing else follows logically, FCOD.
Lets talk about this gag order. There is no possible way Atarus can possibly keep a player from insinuating anything, w/o shutting them up completely. There would always be a way around mod restrictions. So I'm willing to buy that Atarus has placed some general rules on what they can and can't say, and is laughing his head off at the confusion it's created.
Lets talk about holy water. Hal and Darth have both referred to HW killing a type2, and this doesn't match the color. Coincidence? Maybe. What else could this indicate, that they are in cahoots? Of course they are, they're both possessed townies and they want out. The logical explanation is that both have similiar PM's, that are easily misread (cuz scum can't talk yet). Hell, I wouldn't put it past Atarus to have written their PMs that way on purpose. But the point is, again, there's no reasonable scum motivation that I can see here. If it's a slip, Occams Razor sez it's a townie slip.
So - yeah. I'm really not getting this hardon for Hal, and I think thats exactly what it is. I don't think he's scum, and I don't see how you do, and it follows from that that I think your actions are anti-town. Pro-scum? I'm chewing on that.

ETA:I found it, it was nestled a few pages back. Damn, you guys post A LOT! lol.
As for my vote, it stays the same until Hockeyguy decides to unvote. Because he hadn't read my post

Stardragonman. please take careful note of rule 6. Editing posts in this game is a capital offence.
Whether Atarus decides to extend clemency or not (and having seen 303 before edit, I'm prepared to testify that the edit added everything after ETA, but changed nothing before that, materially anyway) is up to him.

Well, Comcast had a guy in the neighborhood so here I am. Sub-scare over! Weak, 2.5/10. Go back to troll college! As far as voting goes, yes, we need nonvoters to post - either give us a lynch vote with your explanation or give us a no-lynch vote and your explanation. Something needs to be on the record for everyone regarding Today's lynch. Voting analysis is one of the town's most powerful tools, and if half the players don't vote and the other half have their votes scattered all over the damn place, well it makes our job of finding patterns that betray scum that much harder.

Apologies if I left anyone hanging with my, "another post shortly comment" There should be a law against getting a new file put on your desk on Friday afternoon. I had composed a fair bit of a post about voting, but since I'm at home now, I'll have to do a short version from scratch. Of the Lead vote getters Stardragonman - I originally didn't see much value in a Day 1 lynch the lurker vote. But since then Star has jumped in with both feet in a pretty noob way. It is pinging me a little but it's obvious new player actions that is doing it - without necessairly being new scum actions. Czech, Mister Blocky & bufftabby All have votes on them for various reasons. some more compelling then others. Of those I'm not loving the vote on Czech. I think his actions are simliar to Star ie - new player, in fact I can recall I acted fairly similiar in my first game. So new player - definitely - new scum? nothing compelling to mind. Both Mister Blocky & bufftabby I can buy those votes. But, I keep having to go back to Mafia Rule #1 - vote for who you think is scummy. And for me at the moment that is bufftabby. VOTE BufftabbyI don't have a case, with quotes and arguments, at least not one that would add anything new to the vote, it is more a 'feel' I am getting.

Ok, don't know if I'll be back before deadline, so I'd better get something on record.
Even though FcoD has a vote on me, I can't see it being anything other than a townie reaction. If he's scum, he's playing this one very well. I'll give him a pass for the time being.
I'm all but certain of Darth's townlieness, and by extention I'm putting trust in ryjae as well.
It might be an odd bias, but the new players are the ones who have been consistently pinging me. Trouble is, once I realized I had that bias going, I started actively looking to counter it, and that's not good either.
Ok, 1 minute until quitting time....my big three of late are Stardragonman, misterblockey and Bufftabby. I think I'm going to hitch a ride on storyteller's synopsis and throw this one in as:
vote Bufftabby
Sorry...If I turn out to be wrong, I'll buy the pee cake.

Hey all just posting to show that I’m still alive. I’m one of those people that honestly don’t have any suspects right now that are vote worthy. I’m having a pretty hard time seeing what other people are finding suspicious on others but I guess that is normal for day 1 (I hope it is at least). Best way to figure out who the scum are is to get discussion going and get some votes on the table right? So I’m going to read through everything again and see if I can truly justify my vote going anywhere.
Till then some thoughts just so they are out there:
-I agree with people saying to leave Hal and Darth alone for now. I originally wanted to vote for one of them for information on how type2 scum work but I see the importance of keeping as many survivors alive as possible. If there is the chance to save them and turn them into survivors that would be highly beneficial. From the sounds of it I don’t think they are lying about what is going on with them so hopefully our holy water person will be able to help one of them at night.
-I can’t say I like hockeyguy8435’s vote on Stardragonman. Why vote for someone who looks like they would be replaced? I think he went for the easiest option available though at least he did get a vote out there.
-I also can’t say I liked Sardargonman’s vote on hockeyguy8435. It was clearly to get back at being voted for and I think it’s obvious that he hasn’t played a game of mafia before. However, besides that I didn’t really like that he was saying hockeyguy isn’t contributing much when he’s posted more than a lot of people here (including myself).
-I personally don’t find Czech unvoting quickly to be suspicious because I think I would have done the same thing. (Clearly I’m noobish as well lol). However, I need to relook at why people were finding him suspicious for voting for Hal in the first place.
-I’m really trying to see how what bufftabby did/said has brought upon her so many votes. It’s something else I’m going to have to relook at now.

Czechs unvote is a null-tell to me. It's the fact that he voted that way in the first place that has me . FCOD is using drastically faulty logic, but has put himself way too far forward on it for me to trust my scumdar on him. Czech earned my vote by following that faulty logic without contributing. I'm not locked on him, but I'm not finding anywhere else to go, either. I'm not feeling the Bufftabby train at all. I've seen the arguments and read her post history, and I just can't see it. I get the feeling that we've wasted a lot of Daylight on trying to figure out the mechanics, and now we're paying for it. I was so bewildered by the closed setup that I made a really stupid mistake, which looks like it has a fairly big chance of getting me lynched.

Alright, here it goes, and explanation follows: Vote hockeyguy8435.Explanation: First off, when he voted for stardragonman earlier, on the reasoning that (paraphrased) “ star’s never posted”, my immediate thought was something along the lines of “Wait a sec, didn’t he just post a couple pages ago apologizing for not posting. Because someone forgot to tell him the game started.” And he had, ( see here), which made me wonder if hockeyguy’s not reading before voting (sure, we’re all gonna miss stuff, but make sure you know what you’re talking about before you make a vote based on it!). (On that note: Did stardragonman really not get told the game had started?) Second off, I quoted a post from hockeyguy yesterday ( this one) and pointed out if his theory was correct, it basically accused Hal and Darth of lying. I asked him straight out if he thought they were lying. He’s posted since then and not answered. On top of that, this particular post was made smack in the middle of the “Do we believe Hal is possessed” discussion. Combine that with the “First off” point and it made me feel strongly that hockeyguy was not following the Day's discussion. So I read his posts. In post #148, hockeyguy said this: That'd be ok with me...I have time. Not an unlimited amount, but time. And this seems like you're basically saying you're possessed. When I came across that, my head exploded. Despite my earlier impression that hockeyguy was completely oblivious to the “Is Hal possessed” discussion, he wasn’t. He got it. Then why, when he later says “what if, once a demon decides to possess someone, said player doesn't know they're possessed”, did he not follow even attempt to tie that analysis into the discussion, instead of just letting the comment sit there like a lump? It gave me a new impression: that he might be trying to smudge Hal and Darth without strongly tying any suspicion against them to himself. And then, when he posted later, he didn't address, or even acknowledge, a direct query on the matter. Now, let’s see if I coded this all correctly. Just in case I didn't: First link: psychopathgame.proboards106.com/index.cgi?board=stuff&action=display&thread=353&page=9#24522Second link: psychopathgame.proboards106.com/index.cgi?board=stuff&action=display&thread=353&page=7#24459

From my perspective? I raise Point A. bufftabby says that I'm obscuring Point B, which is vaguely related to misterblockey's list in that it involves anything that isn't on it. But like I said, I was only using the list to make a point about what we know. Wastes of time, and whatnot.
I was hoping to elicit some kind of reaction with the story quote and my response. I'm just not sure what to do with the one I got. Meh.
Am I certain my vote's going to be on bufftabby by the end of the Day? I still have to go over the thread one more time. I'll definitely be going back and examining all the options.

I've seen the arguments and read her post history, and I just can't see it. I'm even a little at patriots for saying she mischaracterized him... pot, kettle? (post above a response to this quote)

From my perspective? I raise Point A. bufftabby says that I'm obscuring Point B, which is vaguely related to misterblockey's list in that it involves anything that isn't on it. But like I said, I was only using the list to make a point about what we know. Wastes of time, and whatnot. Sure. I guess what I'm saying is that from this 3rd party perspective, I think she made a reasonable misread on you, and the two of you cleared it up right away, it looked like. So I'm a little "eh?" when you bring it up again this late in the Day. Seriously secondthinking my vote on Czech. I mean, scum don't generally roll over and pee on their belly (figuratively, Czech, figuratively ). Regretful town, or seriously good scum play. Dammit.

Right now I'm vacillating between FCoD and Czech. A re-read has mostly convinced me that Darth and Hal are on the level. I just don't get the scum motivation for a lie. We can hypothesize about passive powers that backfire on the holy water guy/exorcist all we like, but I really think that's unlikely. Passive powers are a really power thing to give scum. So I might respectfully suggest that HWG and the Exorcist seriously consider using their power on Darth or Hal toNight if they can. Actually, I'll go one step further: I think that the Exorcist, if he trusts Darth, should target him, and HWG, if he trusts Hal, should target him. If they are two separate roles that will prevent one of them from wasting their power if they target the same person. If the number of exorcisms that can be performed is limited, though, the Exorcist should consider holding off before we get confirmation. Anyway, given that I believe Hal and Darth, I'm looking askance at those who were flinging mud at them. Czech's me too vote concerns me, but FCoD's case concerns me more: I'll re-iterate why I'm suspicious of Hal: 1) His story about holy water killing the demon does not match the opening color. 2) Darth Sensitive's story, which contains the same mistake, follows Hal's and conveniently lends credence to both of them. Possessed players, by my reading, would be converted back to town after being blessed with holy water. Exorcising them seems like somethingthat would be the secondary power of a doc or a cop style role - something that would need to not be done willy nilly. (underlining mine) So, uh, what gives FCoD? It seems to me that Darth was quite aware that an Exorcism is involved. I've already gone over how I'm uncomfortable with FCoD's linking of Hal's and Darth's alignments. Now that I see that any evidence of such a linkage exists mostly in FCoD's imagination, I really don't like his vote. Vote Flying Cow of Doom
